Greencastle, Ind. - The DePauw men's soccer team defeated Capital University at home on Saturday 2-1. The Tigers are now 4-2-1 on the season, while the Comets move to 1-4-3.
From the first whistle, the Tigers pressured the Comets, pressing Capital's backline and forcing errors in the midfield. In the fifth minute, a huge clearance by the DePauw defense found the feet of
Braden Murphey, who settled the ball, split the last two Comet defenders, and put the Tigers up 1-0.Â
DePauw held its 1-0 lead for the majority of the game. However, in the 73rd minute, Capital's Nico Voight beat the Tigers' defensive line and snuck a ball past goalkeeper
Sam Ortner, tying the game at one apiece.
The two teams would turn up their intensity, vying for position and a chance to put their team on top. Fortunately for DePauw, its depth and overall height helped them secure their second goal of the day. Following a corner kick and a redirected ball by
AJ Hockstok,
Ethan Webster lept over his opponents and headed the ball into the back of the Comet's net in the 84th minute for what would become the game-winning goal with seven minutes left in regulation.
The Tigers finished the afternoon with a 16-4 edge in shots and held a 15-2 advantage in corner attempts. In goal for DePauw, Ortner tallied three saves, while Capital's Ethan Ogden kept the Comets in the game with six saves.
The Tigers will travel to Holland, Mich., for their next match to take on Hope College on Wednesday, September 25. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. EDT.
