Valparaiso, Ind.- The DePauw women's tennis team fell to Valparaiso University 7-0 in its opening match of the fall 2024 season.
Valparaiso jumped to an early 1-0 lead after sweeping doubles play. Valpo's Moira Silva and Naomi Lolande defeated the Tigers' Ellen Gardner and Kassie Green 6-1 on court one. The Beacons clinched its doubles point after Sydney Stone and Lacey Tanner beat DePauw's Valerie Doherty and Allie Stamm 6-1 on court two. Valpo completed the doubles sweep on court three after Jolene Fernandes and Brynn Steven defeated the duo of Briah O'Neal and Katie King 6-3.
In singles play, the Beacons found their swing early in the singles matches. On court four, Valerie Doherty fell to Jolene Fernandes 6-1, 6-1, followed by Kassie Green losing to Moira Silva 6-1, 6-1 on court one. Valpo's Brynn Steven clinched the victory for the Beacons after defeating Allie Stamm 6-1, 6-1 on court five. On court three, Katie King lost to Sydney Stone 6-1, 6-3, and Ellen Gardner dropped her court two match 6-1, 6-3. The final court to wrap up the afternoon was court six, where Briah O'Neal fell to Lacey Tanner 7-5, 6-2.
The Tigers return to Greencastle, Ind., on Saturday, September 14, to host the DePauw Fall Invitational. Matches will start at 9 a.m.
