Lexington, Ky. - DePauw opened its doubleheader against Transylvania with an 8-4 victory before dropping the nightcap, 6-3. With the split, DePauw moved to 2-3 on the season.Â
In the opener, the Tigers grabbed a 3-0 lead in the third on
Cameron Macon's sacrifice fly and
Carter Knoll's two-run double.
The Pioneers scored on in the bottom of the third before DePauw put together a four-run sixth.
Grady Johnson's single plated
Danny Glimco before Knoll scored on a balk.
Max Bond and
Drew Straub followed with run-scoring singles to make it 7-1.
Transylvania added two in the bottom of the sixth on Calvin Schubert's fielder's choice with Riley Hill scoring on an error on the play. Trent Youngblood's single then brought home Youngblood.
Ty Sucher's single in the DePauw seventh scored Johnson with the Tigers' final run and the Pioneers added one more in the eighth as Bryce Dreher's single scored Youngblood.
Sucher had three of DePauw's 13 hits, while Straub,Â
Cameron Macon, Knoll, Johnson and Bond added two apiece. Riley Hill had three of Transylvania's five hits.
Michael Vallone moved to 1-0 with the win and struck out six in six innings. Connor Arnold took the loss and dropped to 0-1.
In game two, Transylvania took a 1-0 lead in the first before the Tigers tied it in the fourth on Sucher's grounder that scored Johnson. The Pioneers grabbed the lead for good in the seventh as Trent Pahl brought home Walter Munday with a bases loaded walk, Braden Becker scored on a wild pitch and Schubert hit a three-run homer.
The Tigers wrapped up the scoring in the eighth as
Hunter Hrbek's double scored Glimco and
Nate Hulen's single plated Johnson.
Johnson and Hrbek each had two of DePauw's six hits, while four different Pioneers collected one hit each.
DePauw starter
Pearse Riendeau struck out seven and allowed just one unearned run in six innings.
Charlie Hawk dropped to 0-1 with the relief loss for the Tigers and Camryn Warfield improved to 1-0 for Transylvania with Matt Armstrong collecting his first save.
The teams square off in a Noon single game tomorrow.
