Greencastle, Ind. - DePauw shot 50 percent from the field and hit 8-of-15 from beyond the arc on the way to a 74-52 win over Berea in the opening round of the NCAA Division III Championship. The Tigers (22-7) face Hope in an 8 p.m. second round game tomorrow after the Flying Dutch defeated Ripon in the night's opening game by a 65-54 score.
The Tigers never trailed throughout and scored the final four points of the opening period as
Ainsley Boras and
Tori Allenn each hit shots to give DePauw a 15-9 lead.
Boras opened the DePauw scoring in the second quarter with a jumper before
Tori Allen knocked in a three and
Lydia Stullken hit a layup to make it 22-9 with 6:53 left in the half.
The Mountaineers scored seven straight in a one-minute stretch late in the half to close the game to 31-26, but Boras converted a three-point play to give the Tigers a 34-26 lead at the half.
DePauw kept the lead in double digits and finished the third on a 3-pointer from
Lily Huntzinger before
Lydia Stullken beat the buzzer with a layup off of Huntzingeri's assist to give the Tigers a 55-39 advantage.
Stullken's putback on the Tigers' first possession of the final period and
Riley Mont's three pushed the margin to 21 and Berea got no closer than 15 the rest of the way.
Hassel led DePauw with 12 points and four assists, while Boras grabbed eight rebounds. Stullken paced the Tigers with four of their eight blocked shots.
Lynkaylah James paced Berea with 14 points and seven rebounds followed by Drea Satori and Kayla McClendon with 11 points each. Satori handed out four assists.
While the Tigers shot 50 percent from the floor, Berea connected on just 32.2 percent and the Tigers held a 44-28 rebounding edge. Berea had nine turnovers to the Tigers' 16.
In the opening game, Hope scored 11 straight over a stretch of the first and second periods to push the lead to 10 at 19-9.
Jada Garner and Olivia Bellows each scored 15 for Hope with Raven Jemison hauling down eight rebounds and Garner dishing out four assists.Natalie Rauwolf led Ripon with 13 points and Bella Opelt followed with 11. Laney Havlovitz grabbed seven rebounds with Ella Ten Pas and Havlovitz handing out five assists apiece.
