Tigers Top Flying Dutchmen in Overtime

Holland, Mich. - Kyle Lillwitz scored five of his 17 points in overtime as DePauw topped host Hope College in the final game of the Glenn Van Wieren Classic. The Tigers improved to 5-7, while the Flying Dutchmen dropped to 5-6.

Hope jumped out to an early 19-6 lead, but DePauw responded with an 11-2 run to cut the deficit to four. The Flying Dutchmen held a 33-29 edge at the halftime intermission.

DePauw gained its first lead of the game at 40-39 on Reph Stevenson's free throw with 14:32 left.

The lead went back-and-forth over much of the remainder of the half with neither team leading by more than three over the final seven minutes of regulation.

Caleb Washington's basket with 2:21 left gave DePauw a 63-60 lead, but Gabe Quillan and Eli Schoonveld scored on back-to-back possessions to give the hosts a 64-63 advantage with 1:06 remaining.

Lillwitz put the Tigers back in front with a 3-pointer at the 48-second mark. Hope failed to convert on its next possession, but fouled the Tigers and DePauw missed the front end of a one-and-one. Hope then drew a foul with 0.8 seconds left and Justice Mims drained a pair of free throws. Stevenson's jumper as the horn sounded was off the mark.

After Hope missed on its opening possession of overtime, Stevenson's layup gave the Tigers the lead for good. Lillwitz nailed a three with 2:24 left to push the lead to 71-66.

Hope was within two at 73-71 before Stevenson hit one free throw with 23 seconds left. The Flying Dutchmen missed three 3-pointers on their next possession and DePauw secured the rebound with Sam Jacobs making a free throw for the final four-point margin.

Washington was named the classic MVP and led the Tigers with 18 points, while Lillwitz, an all-classic selection, followed with 17. Brady Kunka scored 14 and grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds, while Stevenson finished with 13 points. Kunka and Washington each totaled three assists.

Quillan led Hope wth 26 points and 10 rebounds with Marcus Workman following with 11 points and five assists. Mims added 10 points.

DePauw shot 43.1 percent from the field to Hope's 37.5 percent. The Tigers held a 45-36 rebounding edge.

DePauw returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 4, with a 3 p.m. game.
