Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

DePauw Remains Undefeated in Conference Play After Defeating Wittenberg 2-1

Greencastle, Ind.- The DePauw women's soccer team beat the Wittenberg University Tigers 2-1 in a must-win game to remain on top of the North Coast Athletic Conference standings. Tonight's win helped the DePauw Tigers improve their overall record to 9-4-3 and NCAC record to 3-0-2, while the Wittenberg Tigers dropped to 3-5-5 overall and 1-2-2 in conference play.

DePauw's two goals of the night were rockets from about 25 yards out. The first goal of the evening came in the 24th minute when Sophia Patrey beat her defender and, off the right foot, found the top right corner of Wittenberg's goal. DePauw would hold onto its one-goal lead throughout the remainder of the first half despite Wittenberg going shot for shot with DePauw.

In the 55th minute of play, Wittenberg's aggressive pressure in the DePauw Tigers' backfield finally paid off, and Grace Koperna found Chamberlain Browning in the middle of the goalie box to tie the game at one apiece. With the game tied at one, both teams were vying for possession of the ball to put their team up, and although DePauw got just three shots off and one corner attempt in the second half, their patience paid off.

At the 79th minute mark, first-year Caroline Tally's pressure on the backline as the Wittenberg's keeper attempted a short goal kick paid off. With two quick steps and a touch to the right, Tally soared a ball over the opposing keeper's head for her first career goal as a DePauw Tiger while securing what would ultimately be the game-winning goal.

Wittenberg finished the evening outshooting DePauw 15-10 and held a 5-4 edge in penalty corners. In goal for the Tigers and keeping DePauw's lead in tack up until the very last seconds of play was Aubree Empie, who recorded eight saves across the night. Wittenberg's Lily Winkle finished the night with four.

DePauw's next matchup is Saturday, October 26, against Kenyon College. The Tigers will take on the Owls in Gambier, Ohio, at 1 p.m.

I chose DePauw for a number of different reasons. First, the University takes academics very seriously and wants their students to excel. I am looking to study in the field of chemistry and believe that DePauw's math and science programs are recognized for their high quality education. I also love the liberal arts style for a school, where I can explore other opportunities and expand my areas of interest. I was recruited by several Division I soccer programs, but decided to play at DePauw, because I really liked the coach and the team, and DePauw will provide me the opportunity to play soccer but also will allow me to enjoy the full college experience.
