Greencastle, Ind.- The DePauw women's soccer team remains unbeaten after beating the Fontbonne University Griffins 2-1 at home. The Tigers improved to 3-0, while the Griffins fell to 0-2-1 for the season.Â
Scoring the first goal on DePauw this season, Fontbonne jumped to a 1-0 lead on Bianca Cortez-Perez's goal in the fourth minute of play. The Griffins would hold onto its lead for the remainder of the first half despite being outshot by the Tigers 7-4.
Down by one heading into the second half, the Tigers would find the back of Fontbonne's net in the 67th minute off a penalty kick goal by Sydney Calisto. With the game knotted at one apiece, 90 seconds later, DePauw's Calisto beat her defender and slipped a pass across to Jess Purtee for a quick chip into the goal to put the Tigers up 2-1 with just over 20 minutes left in regulation.
In those 20 minutes, the Tigers turned up the pressure on the Griffins' backline, leading to seven corner attempts and ten shots. DePauw finished the night outshooting Fontbonne 17-6 and tallied ten corners while giving up no corner attempts on its defensive end.
Holly Pearce finished the evening with four saves in the goal for Fontbonne. Aubree Empie and Mallory Mundy each played a half for the Tigers, with Mundy tallying one save for the day.
The Tigers travel to Notre Dame, Ind., on Saturday, September 9, to face St. Mary's at 2 p.m.Â
