Smith's Four TD Catches Highlight DePauw's Win at Oberlin

Box Score Oberlin, Ohio - DePauw and Oberlin were tied 7-7 early in the second quarter, but the Tigers scored on each of their next nine possessions and pulled away for a 66-7 North Coast Athletic Conference win over the Yeomen. DePauw improved to 5-0 overall and 3-0 in the NCAC, while Oberlin dropped to 1-4 overall and 0-3 in conference play.

Caden Whitehead's 1-yard run on DePauw's first drive of the game gave the guests a 7-0 lead, but Oberlin responded with Cameron Burke's 60-yard catch from Drew Nye. 

DePauw's Matthew Berry missed on a 26-yard field goal try early in the second, but the Yeomen were unable to convert on a fourth-and-three from their own 27 on the next series.

DePauw quarterback Nathan McCahill connected with Jaylon Smith on the next play for a 27-yard score. Another three-and-out by the DePauw defense forced a punt and DePauw started on its own 10. Again, on the first play of the drive, Smith took in McCahill's pass and streaked down the left sideline for a 90-yard score making it 21-7. 

Following an Oberlin punt and Whitehead's 34-yard return with just over five minutes left in the half, DePauw used six plays to cover 31 yards with Gus Baumgartner scoring on a 1-yard run with 2:51 remaining.

The DePauw defense again stopped the Yeomen and Daniel Roach blocked an Oberlin punt that Zach Reese recovered at the Oberlin 37 and DePauw again scored on the first play of the next drive as McCahill connected with Roach on a 37-yard score to push the lead to 42-7 with 44 seconds left. 

On Oberlin's second play of its next series, DePauw's Luke Nolan forced Nye to fumble and Nolan recovered at the Oberlin 33. For the fourth time on the day and the third time with Smith, DePauw again scored on the first play of a drive as McCahill teamed with Smith for a 33-yard score to make it 49-7 with 25 seconds remaining.

Ryland Irvin's interception on Oberlin's first drive of the third quarter set up Joseph Sullivan's successful 26-yard field goal before Carson Johnson scored his first collegiate touchdown on a 13-yard run early in the fourth.

McCahill completed 14-of-21 passes for 320 yards and five touchdowns, while Jack Kazmierczak was 5-of-7 for 45 yards. Smith hauled in six for 200 yards and a school-record tying four touchdowns, while Robby Ballentine caught five for 76 yards. Baumgartner rushed for 85 yards on 12 carries and two touchdowns.

Nye completed 16-of-32 passes for 155 yards with one touchdown and one interceptions. Jamykle Benison caught six for 19 yards and Jack Diskin had four catches for 27 yards. Greg Lane rushed for 15 yards on three tries.

Luke Marsh and Liam Wright each had five tackles with Ethan Lowry leading with 3.0 tackles for loss including a pair of sacks. In all, the Tigers' defense totaled 11.0 tackles for losses totaling 41 yards including 5.0 sacks for 32 yards.

Brandon Hall paced Oberlin with 15 tackles and Luca Friedman followed with 13.

DePauw outgained Oberlin, 559-199 including 194-30 on the ground.

The Tigers host Denison on Saturday, Oct. 7, at 1 p.m.  


NOTES
  • Jaylon Smith's four touchdown catches tied the DePauw single-game record set by Chase Sadler against Allegheny on Oct. 15, 2016.
  • Smith's 200 receiving yards were a career high and marked the 10th time a DePauw receiver reached the 200-yard plateau with the last being Andy Hunt against Wittenberg on Oct. 10, 2015. 
  • The Tigers' 49 first-half points and 42 in the second period were both modern day program records.
  • With two rushing touchdowns, Gus Baumgartner moved his career total to 27 which ranks in a tie for third in DePauw career history with Johnathon Stigall (1995-98). Jeremiah Marks (2004-07) holds the record with 52 and Rich Bonaccorsi (1981-84) totaled 30. 
  • DePauw totaled 559 yards of offense marking the fourth time this season with at least 535 total yards which is just the second time that's happened in school history (2016).
  • Nathan McCahill's efficiency rating of 273.2 marked the third time he's posted a rating of at least 263.0 this season.
