Greencastle, Ind. - DePauw totaled 596 yards of offense and scored in each quarter on the way to a 49-0 win over Hiram in the North Coast Athletic Conference opener for both schools. The Tigers improved to 3-0 overall and the Terriers dropped to 0-3.
DePauw opened the scoring on its second drive of the game, as the Tigers needed just four plays to cover 76 yards with
Nathan McCahill connecting with
Jaylon Smith for a 37-yard score with 3:14 left in the opening quarter.Â
The Tigers made it 14-0 early in the second as McCahill teamed with
Robby Ballentine on a 24-yard score which was set up by McCahill's 51-yard pass to
Caden Whitehead on the previous play.
Hiram crossed midfield for the first time in its next series, but DePauw's
Owen Rossell and
Joey Roland sacked Sean Tejeda on fourth down.Â
Gabe Quigley took a handoff and ran down the right sideline for a 55-yard score on the first play of the ensuing drive.
Following a three-and-out by the defense, DePauw took over on its own 49 and used 11 plays to cover 51 yards with
Gus Baumgartner scoring from the 3 to make it 28-0 with 1:19 left in the half.
McCahill again teamed with Smith for a 37-yard score with 4:34 remaining in the third to cap a four-play drive and then Quigley scored on another 37-yarder from McCahill to make it 42-0 with 47 seconds left in the third.
Baumgartner's 6-yard run with 12:45 left in the game wrapped up the scoring.
Baumgartner rushed for 115 yards on 18 carries as the Tigers held a 239-59 yard edge on the ground. Raequan Davis-Hereford led Hiram with 19 rushing yards.
McCahill completed 17-of-21 passes for 357 yards and four touchdowns with Smith and Quigley each catching five passes. Smith totaled 128 receiving yards and Quigley had 86. Tejeda was 18-of-36 for 211 yards, but was intercepted twice. Davis-Hereford caught eight for 86 yards.
Luke Marsh led the DePauw defense with seven tackles, while
Nate Glazebrook finished with five.
Ryland Irvin and
Matthew Coons each had interceptions for the Tigers and the unit recorded four sacks. DePauw held Hiram to just 270 yards of offense.
Gavin Cruser paced Hiram with 10 tackles with Dylan Baliker and Vance Boy each added seven.
