Tigers Split Home Doubleheader Against the Terriers

Greencastle, Ind.-  After losing 5-4 in the opener, DePauw rallied for a 6-2 win in game two and split the North Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader. The Tigers moved to 13-18 overall and 8-2 in conference play, while the Terriers are now 17-13 and 4-6 in the NCAC.

In the opener, Hiram got on the board first after Darian Kanno reached on an error, giving teammate Giselle Bahena enough time to score from third. DePauw matched that in the bottom of the first as Katie Mathies singled through the left side to score Goose Moore.

The Terriers' Abriana Schwartz hit a two-run homer to center field in the second for a 3-1 lead before DePauw answered in the bottom of the frame with three runs off of four hits and an error. Riley Heim's well-placed bunt drove in Lily Jennings to cut the lead to one, followed by Ella Ohrvall's single up the middle which brought home Abby Pyburn. A Hiram error allowed Heim to score and give the Tigers a 4-3 lead.

Bahena snuck a ball down the right side in the fourth to score Schwartz and even the score at 4-4. Kanno's solo homer in the top of the seventh proved to be the game-winner.

Pyburn had two of DePauw's seven hits, while Hiram's Kanno, Angel Santellan, and Schwartz each had two of Hiram's seven hits.

Megan Asher took the loss and dropped to 7-9, while Kanno improved to 7-4.

In game two, DePauw took a 1-0 lead in the first on Mathies' RBI single down the right line. The Tigers held onto its lead until the top of the third as Kiley Perez drove in a run with a double, followed by a single by Kanno to score the Terriers' second run of the afternoon.

DePauw regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth after knocking in five runs on five hits. Mathies singled through the right side driving in Ohrvall and Emily DuMais to put the Tigers up 3-2. After DePauw loaded the bases, the Terriers brought Kanno back into the circle. A wild pitch allowed Mathies to score before Heim walked to again load the bases. Emily Minett entered as a pinch-hitter and drove in Madi Lockridge and Kelsey Bernhard for a 6-2 lead.

The Tigers allowed just one hit over the final two innings to wrap up the game.

Mathies had two of DePauw's nine hits, while Kanno finished the afternoon with two of Hiram's seven hits.

Riley Magoon earned the win and improved to 1-3, while Trinity Meza dropped to 5-5.

DePauw returns to action on Wednesday, April 26, with a 3:30 p.m. NCAC doubleheader at Ohio Wesleyan.

I chose DePauw because it stood out compared to all of the other campuses I went to. Between the people, the campus, the softball program and the community, it just felt like home. I knew after the first time I came to campus for a softball camp that DePauw was the one.
