Wooster, Ohio - DePauw trailed Wabash by as many as 19 in the second half, closed the gap to two, but the Little Giants held on for a 75-67 win in the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament semifinal. The Tigers finished their season at 18-9, while Wabash improved to 20-7 and advanced to tomorrow's championship game against Wooster.
The teams battled back and forth during the early stages of the first half before Wabash went on a 12-2 run to grab a 28-16 lead. The Little Giants took a 37-26 lead to the intermission.
Wabash opened the second half with a 10-3 stretch to take a 47-29 lead. Eventually that margin reached 19 at 50-31 after Sam Comer hit a 3-pointer with 16:24 left.
DePauw scored the next five on buckets by
Sam Jacobs and
Grant Niego and a free throw from
Ryan Jacobson. Wabash countered with a basket before the Tigers rattled off 10 straight capped by a Jacobs trey at the 10:50 mark which made it 52-46.
Ahmoni Jones scored to stop the run, but a
Billy Bach basket followed by a pair of scores from Jacobs trimmed the deficit to 54-52 with 8:10 left.
Wabash stretched the lead back to seven with five straight points before a 5-0 Tigers run brought DePauw to within 61-59 after
Grant Niego's 3-pointer at the 4:38 mark.
Josh Whack scored Wabash's next seven points with two 3-pointers sandwiching a free throw to make it 68-61 with 2:30 remaining.Â
DePauw got as close as four at 71-67 with 46 seconds left after Bach's jumper. Whack made two free throws with 33 seconds left and a DePauw 3-point attempt was off the mark before Edreece Redmond knocked in two free throws with 17 seconds left to seal the win.
Jacobs led DePauw with 20 points, while
Grant Niego followed with 14, Jacobson 12 and
Elijah Hales 11. Hales matched a career-high with nine rebounds and dished out four assists.
Six Little Giants scored in double figures paced by 15 from Jones and 14 by Whack. Gavin Schippert, Vinny Buccilla and Redmond each scored 11 with Comer adding 10. Jones grabbed 12 rebounds and Comer 10 as both posted double-doubles.
DePauw shot 43.1 percent from the field to Wabash's 41.9 percent, but the Little Giants hit 11 3-pointers to the Tigers' four. Wabash outrebounded DePauw, 38-34.
