Greencastle, Ind. - DePauw held visiting Wooster scoreless for nearly five minutes late in the second half and turned a seven-point deficit to a five-point lead and held on for a 60-58 North Coast Athletic Conference win over the Fighting Scots. The Tigers moved to 5-4 overall and 2-2 in the NCAC, while Wooster dropped to 2-6 overall and 1-2 in league play.
Wooster opened the game with a 9-2 lead on 3-pointers from JJ Cline, Jamir Billings and Ashton Price. DePauw put together a10-0 run to take its first lead of the game with
Caleb Washington scoring six during that stretch with the final basket giving the Tigers an 18-15 lead with 8:26 left in the half.
The Fighting Scots regained the lead before and it went back-and-forth until Isaiah Johnson nailed a three to make it 30-26 with 1:32 remaining in the half. The Tigers, however, closed the half on a 6-0 spurt that included
Grant Niego's bucket and two free throws each from
Cooper Horn and
Billy Bach to give DePauw a 32-30 advantage at the intermission.
DePauw pushed its lead to four early in the second half and it held it until EJ Kapihe's layup with 13:16 left gave Wooster a 39-38 lead. The Fighting Scots later pushed the margin to seven as Nick Everett's two free throws with 5:52 remaining capped a 6-0 run and made it 52-45.Â
Reph Stevenson scored on a layup and Washington knocked in a trey to cut the Wooster lead to 52-50 with 4:01 left. Niego evened the count with a pair of free throws as Everett fouled out and
Sam Jacobs put DePauw in front with a layup with 2:11 left. Cline became the second Scot to foul out and Jacobs knocked in both charity tosses to push the DePauw lead to 56-52 with 1:53 remaining. Jacobs then hit one of two free throws 24 seconds later to give the Tigers their largest lead of the game at 57-52. That capped DePauw's 12-0 run in which Wooster missed four field goals, one free throw and committed four turnovers.
Kapihe stopped the run with four straight free throws with the final two closing the gap to 57-56 with 28 seconds left. After the Tigers missed a pair of free throws, Wooster had a chance to retake the lead but Niego's steal and two free throws with 5.9 seconds left gave DePauw a 59-56 lead. After a DePauw timeout, the Tigers fouled Price near midcourt with 3.0 seconds remaining and he sank both free throws to cut the DePauw lead to 59-58.
The Fighting Scots fouled Washington with 1.5 seconds left and he made the first of two free throws. Wooster grabbed the rebound off the miss of the second shot but a desperation heave was short of the basket and DePauw secured the win.
Washington led all scorers with a career-high 18 points and Niego followed with 12.
Camden Brown grabbed eight rebounds to lead the Tigers, while Jacobs and
Brady Kunka each dished out three assists with Niego and Washington totaling three steals apiece.
Kapihe led Wooster with 16 points and Price added 14, while Jaiden Cox-Holloway hauled down eight rebounds. Price and Billings each had three assists and Billings totaled four steals.
Each team shot 33.3 percent from the field and DePauw held a 39-38 edge on the boards. The Tigers committed 13 turnovers to Wooster's 18 and the Tigers held a 26-14 advantage on points off of turnovers.
DePauw travels to Franklin on Saturday, Dec. 16, for a 3 p.m. game.
