Tigers Fall to Big Red in NCAC Semifinals

Granville, Ohio- The DePauw field hockey team fell to No. 2-seeded Denison in its 2-0 North Coast Athletic Conference semifinal loss. The Tigers finished its 2023 season 11-8, while Denison improved to 11-6.

From the first whistle, the two teams pushed the pace of the game, vying for position to take the lead. After a scoreless first period, the Denison Big Red snuck a goal past goalkeeper Scarlett Oaks in the 20th minute to go up 1-0 heading into the half.

The Tigers continued to find themselves deep in Denison's defensive third throughout the second half; however, they were met by a wall of defenders repelling every attempt to knot the game up. In the 33rd minute, the Big Red's Katherine Flanagan extended Denison's lead to two with just over a period and a half left in regulation.

Despite keeping shots on goal and the amount of penalty corner attempts close between the two teams, DePauw couldn't capitalize and cut Big Red's lead. Denison finished the evening with an edge in shots and penalty corner attempts, outshooting the Tigers 7-5 and earning four penalty corners while giving up three in its defensive end.

Oaks was in the cage for the Tigers and tallied four saves, while Athena Joannou finished with three saves for Denison.
