Delaware, Ohio - DePauw battled back from an 18-point deficit to force overtime at Ohio Wesleyan, but the Battling Bishops never trailed in the extra session and topped the Tigers by a 90-86 score. The Tigers' six-game win streak came to an end as they dropped to 13-4 overall and 5-3 in the North Coast Athletic Conference. The Battling Bishops improved to 12-5 overall and 7-1 in conference play.
DePauw held a 17-16 lead after
Kyle Lillwitz hit a 3-pointer with 11:24 left in the first half, but the hosts scored nine-straight to take a 25-17 lead. The lead reached as much as 18 points at 48-30 before DePauw's
Elijah Hales hit three free throws near the end of the half to close the gap to 48-33 at the break.
Ohio Wesleyan's lead was still 12 after Jack Clement's bucket with 7:28 left in regulation made it 68-56. DePauw cut the lead in half with a 6-0 stretch before the Battling Bishops pushed the lead back to nine at 74-65 with 3:16 left. DePauw's
Camden Brown scored on three-straight possessions with the last coming with 1:23 remaining to cut the hosts' lead to 74-71. Clement and Hales exchanged 3-pointers before an Ohio Wesleyan turnover gave the Tigers the ball. Hales nailed a trey with 26 seconds left to even the score at 77-77. The Battling Bishops missed on two opportunities in the closing seconds to force the overtime.
The Battling Bishops scored the first six points of overtime to take an 83-77 advantage. Two free throws each from
Sam Jacobs and Brown closed the gap to 83-81 with just under one minute left. Ohio Wesleyan's Curtis White scored to expand the lead to four, but Brown countered with 31 seconds left to make it 85-83.
Grant Niego was unable to convert a steal into a basket, but rebounded his own miss. Hales was whistled for an offensive foul with nine seconds remaining.
Ohio Wesleyan's Henry Hinkle was fouled by by
Nolan Niego, but was only able to convert the second of two free throws. Hales was fouled and hit both free throws with five seconds left to cut the lead to 86-85. White then made both free throws after a DePauw foul. Hales was again fouled and made the first, but DePauw couldn't rebound the missed second shot. Tony Carter hit two free throws to wrap up the win.
Brown scored a career-high 24 points and matched a career-best with 10 rebounds. Hales added 23 points followed by Lillwitz with 12 and Jacobs with 11.
Clement paced Ohio Wesleyan with 33 points, while Hinkle added 19 and Carter 13. Carter added eight rebounds in the win.
DePauw shot 48.3 percent for the game including 60 percent in the second half. Ohio Wesleyan connected on 44.8 percent from the floor.
DePauw travels to Wooster on Saturday, Jan. 21, for a 3:15 p.m. NCAC contest.
