#6 Tigers Remain Undefeated in NCAC After Sweeping Ohio Wesleyan

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Greencastle, Ind.: Stretching its win streak to 15, the No. 6 DePauw remains undefeated in the North Coast Athletic Conference following its eighth doubleheader sweep this season, beating Ohio Wesleyan by scores of 6-1 and 5-3. Ohio Wesleyan fell to 10-20 overall and 6-8 in conference play.

DePauw took advantage of two early lineup walks in game one, putting Grace Smith and Kelsey Bernhard in scoring position at the bottom of the first. Paige Price's single down the line drove in Smith, and some miscommunication by the Battling Bishops allowed both Price and Bernhard to advance. The Tigers would go up 2-0 heading into the top of third after Emily Timberman drove in Bernhard with a sacrifice single to the shortstop.

Leading off in the bottom of the fourth, Drew Bratcher doubled to right-center. Pinch running for Bratcher, Goose Moore would score following a sacrifice groundout by Emma Konrad, advancing her to third, and a well-placed single by Alyssa Anderson for the Tigers' third run of the afternoon.

Cami Henry came in to relieve starting pitcher Annika Garwood after Ohio Wesleyan managed to load the bases with just one out in the top of the sixth. Henry would give up one run and would squash the Battling Bishops' hopes of a comeback with the help of a heads-up play by Smith at third, followed by an unassisted line-drive to Henry.

DePauw would put game one away with three more runs in the bottom of the sixth. Bratcher led the Tigers with her second double of the afternoon and would advance to third following a sacrifice bunt by Konrad. Driving in Bratcher was Anderson again with a single to right. The final two runs came off a right-line single by Chase Epp, which advanced Macey Cox, who pinch ran for Anderson and Smith, putting DePauw up 6-1.

Bratcher and Grace each had two of the seven hits in game one. Garwood improved to 2-0 after allowing three hits in five innings, while Henry tallied her second save after one inning of hitless relief. Ohio Wesleyan's Katie Chittum dropped to 8-11.

In the nightcap, an error in the bottom of the second set the stage for Kate Geary to get into scoring position. Geary stole second just before Katerina Kilgore singled up the middle allowing Geary plenty of time to round third and score.

The Tigers tallied two more runs after loading the bases in the third and scoring after Kilgore was walked and Alissa Dierks was hit by a pitch. Leading off in the fourth, Goose Moore singled up the middle and stole second base before advancing to third following a sacrifice bunt by Price. Bratcher would drive in Moore to give the Tigers a 4-0 lead heading into the top of the fifth.

The Battling Bishops drove in three runs in the top of the fifth, cutting DePauw's lead to one. Leading off for the Tigers, Dierks advanced to first after getting hit by her second pitch of the evening. She would advance to second following a sacrifice groundout by Smith and eventually scored after Moore hit a single and the Battling Bishop's committed an error, putting the Tigers up 5-3.

Henry improved to 20-5, with Ohio Wesleyan's Chittum fell to 8-12

DePauw hosts Kenyon College, on its senior day, in a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday, April 30.

I chose DePauw for the ample opportunity to grow equally in the classroom and on the softball field. At DePauw, you are a student before an athlete and I think that speaks volumes to the quality and value of the education given at this institution.
