Box Score 2 Columbus, Ga. - DePauw came back from a 7-1 deficit to defeat Texas Lutheran, 13-9, in today's opening game at the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Leadoff Classic and then dropped an 11-8 contest to Alma. The Tigers are now 3-5 on the season.
Against Texas Lutheran, the Bulldogs scored five unearned runs in the first before DePauw reached the board in the top of the second on Goose Moore's double that scored Lily Jennings. Texas Lutheran added two more in the second for a 7-1 advantage.
DePauw started its comeback with a four-run fourth that included a two-run double by Grace Smith. Jade Mejia Wick stole home in the fourth to trim the Bulldogs' lead to 7-6.
Texas Lutheran responded with two more in the fourth for a 9-6 lead.
Drew Bratcher doubled home Smith in the fifth before the Tigers took the lead in the sixth as Caleigh Cramer reached on a fielder's choice that scored Kate Geary and Katerina Kilgore followed with a two-run double. Kilgore scored when Smith singled before Ali Dierks brought home Smith with a bunt and Alyssa Anderson scored Kelsey Bernhard with a single.
Smith had four of DePauw's 18 hits with Anderson, Kilgore and Bratcher finishing with two each. Casey Martin, Bailey Hudgeons, Laura Hernandez, Faith Hernandez and Olivia Prinz each had two of the Bulldogs' 13 hits.
Kersten Brayton pitched three innings of scoreless relief to move to 1-0, while Sydney Oullette dropped to 2-3.
In the Alma game, the Tigers fell behind in the first as the Scots scored once in the top half of the inning. DePauw, however, responded with three in the bottom of the inning as Emily Timberman drove in two with a double and Annika Garwood plated one with a single.
Alma cut the deficit two one with a single run in the third before DePauw scored twice in the bottom of the third to extend its lead to 5-2. The Scots took the lead with five in the fourth and then added two each in the fifth and seventh innings. DePauw scored three in the bottom of the seventh for the final three-run margin.
DePauw wraps up play at the Classic with Sunday games against Piedmont and Berry (Ga.).
