Box Score 2 Orange, Calif. - Tenth-ranked DePauw blanked 18th-ranked Chapman, 3-0, in game one and battled back from a 9-1 deficit in the nightcap before falling, 13-12 in 12 innings. The Tigers are now 12-6, while the Panthers moved to 17-3.
In the opener, the teams battled through six scoreless innings before the Tigers broke through in the seventh. Ali Dierks and Paige Price each singled to start the inning with Abby Pyburn and Madi Lockridge entering as runners. Drew Bratcher's single plated Pyburn before Jade Mejia Wick brought home Lockridge with a bunt single. Mejia Wick later scored when Kelsey Bernhard reached on a fielder's choice with an error on the play.
Seven different Tigers had one hit each, while the Panthers totaled just two hits.
Cami Henry improved to 10-4 with the shutout, while Jillian Kelly dropped to 10-1.
In the nightcap, the Tigers fell behind 9-1 through two innings, but began their comeback with a four-run fourth which included a two-run triple by Mejia Wick. Chapman made it 10-5 with a single run in the fifth before Drew Bratcher clubbed a two-run homer in the sixth and Price cleared the bases with a three-run triple in the seventh to even the count at 10-10.
The tiebreaker rule started in the eighth and neither team scored in the eighth and ninth innings. In the 10th, Goose Moore's sacrifice fly scored Caelan Moran, but Tracie Okumura's bunt single in the bottom of the inning brought home Samantha Kennedy.
Lockridge started the 11th on second, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a passed ball. The Tigers' defense recorded an out at the plate on a fielder's choice, but back-to-back singles scored Katie Carder to make it 12-12.
DePauw was unable to push a run across in the top of the 12th and Chapman capitalized as Okumura's bunt moved Allie Tajii to third and Ilianna Serna followed with an RBI single.
Price and Moore each had three of DePauw's 15 hits, while Kate Geary and Mejia Wick each had two. Annika Briski had four of Chapman's 18 hits with Serna and Grace Fosselman totaling three each.
Simi Lauwers improved to 7-1 with the complete game win, while Henry dropped to 10-5 after pitching six innings of relief, allowing one earned run with eight strikeouts and no walks.
DePauw opens North Coast Athletic Conference play on Saturday, April 2, when it hosts Oberlin in a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
