Tigers Take Down Terriers on Senior Day

Box Score

Greencastle, Ind.: A week after falling to Hiram College on the road, the DePauw men's basketball team returned home and beat the Terriers 66-54 on Senior Day.

The Terriers forced the Tigers to play catch up from the jump, growing its lead to as much as eight after just five minutes of play.

A three-pointer by Nolan Niego at the 13-minute mark energized the DePauw offense and started the Tigers 18-2 run to overtake the Terriers 28-20 with under ten minutes to go in the half.

In the final minutes before the half, Hiram regained a four-point lead. Though the Tigers were down by four heading into the second, the Tigers played a tight offensive game, turning the ball over just four times while forcing eight on the other end. Free throws also played a significant role in DePauw's first-half run shooting 13 of 14 from the line.

In the second half of play, the Tigers pulled themselves out of a deficit by attacking the basket and knocking down 66% of its free throws.

To take back the lead, a driving layup by Ryan Jacobson followed by a steal and fastbreak attempted by Cooper Mixon put DePauw back on top by three. From that point on, the Tigers held onto the lead, pushing the game's pace and ballooning its lead to as much as 14.

Elijah Hales led the Tigers' offense with 18 points, followed by Grant Niego with 14 and Mixon with 11. Despite being outrebounded 41-26, DePauw's aggressive transition defense led to 19 points off of 17 turnovers.

The Tigers improve to 8-10 overall and 5-7 in North Coast Athletic Conference play. DePauw faces Allegheny Sunday, February 6 at 3 pm EST in Neal Fieldhouse.
