Hilo, Hawaii - In a game that featured 18 lead changes and four ties, DePauw used a 12-0 run that bridged the third and fourth periods on the way to a 76-66 win over Grove City in the Tigers' opening game in the Big Island Holiday Classic. DePauw moved to 5-4 on the season with the win, while the Wolverines dropped to 4-5.
DePauw trailed by as many as five in the opening period and were down, 20-17, at the quarter break. The Tigers still trailed by three at 28-25 midway through the second, but went on a 6-0 run to grab a 31-28 lead with one minute left in the half. The Wolverines made a couple of late free throws to close the halftime gap to 31-30.
The lead changed hands nine times in the third before
Lily Huntzinger hit one free throw and
Moira McGinley added a pair to tie the contest at 46-46 as the teams headed to the fourth.
Diana Burgher gave DePauw a two-point lead before
Ava Hassel hit a pair of buckets and McGinley converted a three-point play to make it 55-46 with 8:19 remaining.
Grove City closed to within four with just under three minutes left before the Tigers scored the game's final six points to close out the victory.
Mya Shannon paced DePauw with 21 points, while Hassel added 19 and McGinley 12.
Megan Kallock led Grove City with 24 points and Clara Hannon followed with 10.
Lydia Stullken and
Lyla Barr each hauled down six rebounds for DePauw with Mara Polczynski snagging six for the Wolverines. Each team finished with 38 rebounds.
The Tigers shot 42.6 percent from the field including 62.5 percent in the fourth period, while Grove City connected on 44.3 percent from the floor. DePauw attempted 20 more free throws and made 10 more in the win.
DePauw face the College of St. Benedict tomorrow at 3 p.m. HST (8 p.m. EST).
