Greencastle, Ind.- The DePauw University field hockey team fell short in its quest to finish the NCAC season as regular season and tournament champions after losing to Ohio Wesleyan 1-0 in double overtime.
Â
In front of an energized crowd, the Tigers fought tooth and nail against the Battling Bishops. Both teams played with aggression from the jump, seeking opportunities early within the striking circle. In the first half of play, the shot differential between DePauw and Ohio Wesleyan was only separated by two shots; however, after two scoreless periods, the Battling Bishops found themselves outshooting the Tigers 8-3 by the end of regulation.
Â
By the time overtime rolled around, DePauw goalkeeper
Bella Lauber had already made four saves, one of which was a penalty stroke that she batted out of the air. Along with Lauber's saves, the defensive line shut down ten penalty corners throughout regulation keeping the Tigers' hopes alive.
Â
The first overtime was all Battling Bishops, with Ohio Wesleyan putting up three shots and awarded two penalty corners while DePauw was forced to be on the defensive. Unwilling to back down the Tigers came out of the overtime break looking to score; unfortunately for DePauw, its exquisite defensive game came to an end just three minutes into the second overtime. The Battling Bishop's Veronica Hardman took two shots, seconds from each other, with her second attempt finding the back of DePauw's cage after receiving a quick pass from Alyssa Markell in a scuffle to clear the ball in front of the Tigers' cage.
Â
DePauw's goalkeeper Lauber finished the day with seven saves and an overall record of 10-3, while Ohio Wesleyan's goalie improved to 16-2.
Â
Three DePauw field hockey team members were named to the NCAC All-Tournament team, first years
Hailey Nowak and
Margaret Volpe, and sophomore goalkeeper Lauber. The Tigers finished its season with a record of 13-5 overall, 8-0 in North Coast Athletic Conference play, recording its fourth regular season championship title since joining the NCAC in 2011.
