Greencastle, Ind.- Meeting for the second time this year, the DePauw field hockey team beat the Denison University Big Red 1-0 on Senior day to clinch the top seed in the North Coast Athletic Conference tournament. The Tigers finished the regular season with an overall record of 12-5 and 8-0 in conference play, the Big Red dropped to 11-5 and 6-2 in NCAC play.
Denison, from the jump, pressured DePauw's backline, outshooting the Tigers 7-1 in the first period. DePauw would stifle the Big Red's offense in the second period, giving up no penalty corners and allowing Denison just one shot before halftime.
After a scoreless first half, in the 39th minute of play, DePauw's
Alexandra May rebounded a shot off the Big Red's goalie and found
Marley Heitman, who gathered May's pass and put the ball in the back of Denison's cage. Despite a flurry of shots and penalty corners throughout the fourth period, DePauw held firm to its one-goal lead and ultimately came out on top.
Though Denison finished the game outshooting DePauw 12-3 and edged the Tigers 9-5 in penalty corners, the defensive efforts by DePauw's backline played a crucial role in today's victory.
In goal,
Bella Lauber completed the afternoon with five saves, and the Big Red's Athena Joannou had one save in the cage.
DePauw returns home to Reavis Stadium on Tuesday, November 1, as the No.1 seed for its NCAC semifinal game against the No. 4 seeded Allegheny Gators, starting at 3 p.m.
