Box Score Cincinnati, Ohio- Recording its second road shutout, the DePauw University Men's Soccer team beat the Lions of Mount Saint Joseph 3-0 in its first game of the Wilmington College Kiwanis Classic.
From kickoff, the Tigers took control of the ball and pace of the game, recording its first shot on goal at the one-minute mark.
DePauw's pressure in Mt. St. Joseph's defensive end became too much to handle in the 18th minute after Ben Weidner passed the ball to Sam Thiel, who sent a rocket past the fingertips of Lion's goalie Gustavo Gutierrez and into the top left corner of the net.
That goal seemed to energize the Tigers, and within five minutes of the first goal, two more DePauw goals were put in by Joel Thompkins and Weidner, who were both assisted by Flynn Sheehan.
With a 3-0 lead going into the second half, the Tigers fought to extend their lead, outshooting the Lions 10-to-3. Though DePauw was held to its three goals, it finished with 16 corners and only allowed six shots by Mt. St. Joseph.
The Tigers play its second game of the Wilmington College Kiwanis Classic at home against Manchester University this Sunday, September 5, at 2:30 pm EDT.
