DePauw Drops Season Opener at Division I Butler

Indianapolis, Ind. - DePauw opened its 134th football season at Division I Butler and came away with a 49-24 defeat. The Bulldogs improved to 1-1 with the win.

Butler set the tone on the game's first play as Bret Bushka completed a 49-yard pass play to Yogi Flager to the DePauw 26. Five plays later, Nick Orlando rushed in from the 1 to give Butler a 7-0 lead. 

DePauw quarterback Chase Andries connected with Trey Shaw for a 16-yard gain on the Tigers' first offensive play of the season, but the drive stalled at midfield. The Bulldogs then embarked on a 9-play, 80-yard series with Flager hauling in a 6-yard scoring pass from Bushka to push the lead to 14-0 with 5:47 left in the opening stanza.

Later in the first, DePauw defensive back Liam Pooler picked off a Bushka pass at the DePauw 43 and the Tigers capitalized as Drew Moore scored on a 4-yard run and Joe Sullivan booted the PAT to make it 14-7 with 11:15 remaining in the half.

The Bulldogs responded with a 9-play drive capped by Orlando's 2-yard run. DePauw was stopped on a three-and-out and Butler extended the lead to 28-7 on Bushka's 11-yard pass to Flager with 56 seconds left in the half.

Andries was picked off near midfield on the third play of the second half and Kavon Samuels scored on a 2-yard run, seven plays later.

Andries teamed with Gabe Quigley for a 59-yard pass play on the Tigers' next possession and Andries scored on a 7-yard run to cut the Butler lead to 35-14 with 7:08 remaining in the third period. 

The Tigers forced Butler to punt for the first time on the next series, but Devin Aguilar recorded his second interception of the period on DePauw's second play of the drive. Five plays later, AJ Deinhart made it 42-14 with an 11-yard run which capped a 5-play possession.

Moore's second score, a 26-yard run, came on the first play of the fourth and was set up by Jaylon Smith's 33-yard catch from an Andries pass and made it 42-21.

Butler chewed up over eight minutes with its next drive of 14 plays with Orlando scoring on a 1-yard run.

Joe Sullivan wrapped up the scoring on DePauw's next possession with a 27-yard field goal with 5:05 left.

Butler outgained the Tigers 544-361 including a 383-196 edge on the ground. The Bulldogs totaled 30 first downs to DePauw's 14.

Baumgartner paced DePauw with 70 rushing yards on five carries with Moore totaling 62 on 10 tries and a pair of scores. Andries completed 12 of 21 pases for 165 yards with Trey Shaw and Josh Major each catching three.

Samuels topped the Bulldogs' rushing attach with 101 yards in 23 carries with Bushka completing 11 of 13 passes for 161 yards. Flager caught four for 95 yards.

Brevon Gude led DePauw with 11 tackles and Pooler added 10 in addition to his one interception. Eloi Bigirimana led the Butler defense with five tackles.

DePauw returns to action on Sautrday, September 18, when it hosts Kenyon in the North Coast Athletic Conference opener at 1 p.m. in the Nick Mourouzis Memorial Game.
