Box Score Greencastle, Ind.: The DePauw University field hockey team fell 2-1 in a nail-biting home opener loss to the Earlham College Quakers.
From the start, both the Tigers and the Quakers played with a tenacity to get on the board first.
DePauw secured the first goal of the 2021 season, following a settled penalty corner by Sarah Goff, who then found Allison Quackenbush to score.
The Tigers held onto its lead across two periods however, in the 24th minute of play, the Quakers crashed the circle and slipped a goal just past the DePauw backline and goalkeeper Allie Duranceau tying the game at 1-1.
Making her college debut with just two minutes left in the second quarter, first-year Scarlett Oaks entered the game in goal. Though the Tigers did give up a second goal just before the half, DePauw managed to keep Earlham at bay despite being outshot 7-1 in the second half.
Oaks would finish the night with six saves and faced six penalty corners throughout the second half.
Joining Oaks with some key defensive stops were Libby Hennelly and Christina Bourantas, both in and out of the circle.
The Tigers face Rhodes this Sunday, September 5, at Noon EDT back in Reavis Stadium.
