Tigers Open Season with Win at Ohio Wesleyan; Dietz Collects First Coaching Win

Delaware, Ohio - Scoring on its first two possessions, DePauw never trailed on the way to a 35-21 win at Ohio Wesleyan in the season opener for both schools. The win was also the first for DePauw head coach Brett Dietz.

Quarterback Chase Andries tossed a 21-yard scoring pass to Ethan Hudson to cap DePauw's 9-play, 78-yard opening drive and the DePauw defense responded with a three-and-out. After 7-yard runs by both Noah Jones and Will Schmidt, Andries scored on a 49-yard run to make it 13-0 just eight minutes into the season. DePauw's defense forced the Battling Bishops into four punts and Josh Pottebaum ended the other with an interception.

Ohio Wesleyan scored on its second series of the third as Austin Womack completed a 7-yard scoring pass to Michael Craider to cut the Tigers' lead to 13-7. DePauw countered as quarterback Wally Renie rushed for 35 yards and threw for nine, while Will Schmidt rushed for 23 including the final seven and a two-point conversion to push the lead to 21-7 with 3:24 remaining in the quarter.

Andries and Josh Major teamed on a 3-yard scoring pass early in the fourth, but the hosts scored on their next two drives as Womack connected with Trey Dixon for five yards and Kenny Streb for 55 to close the Tigers' lead to 28-21 with 5:56 left. 

DePauw put the game away on its next drive as it covered 58 yards in six plays with Andries teaming with Hudson for a 24-yard score.

Schmidt rushed for 71 yards on 21 carries and Andries also totaled 71 rushing yards on eight tries. Andries completed 13 of 26 passes for 153 yards and three scores. Major hauled in five for 62 yards and Hudson had four grabs totaling 73 yards.

Womack completed 22 of 40 for 278 yards and three touchdowns with Craider catching eight for 111 yards.

Gruner paced DePauw's defense with six tackles, while Joe Zanca had 2.0 tackles for losses totaling 10 yards. Shane Quin paced Ohio Wesleyan with 10 tackles including 2.0 for losses of four yards.

DePauw outgained Ohio Wesleyan, 404-317 and held the Battling Bishops to just 39 rushing yards. The Tigers also held a 25-14 edge in first downs.

DePauw travels to Wooster on Saturday, March 13, for a 1 p.m. contest against the Fighting Scots.
