Tigers Defeat Panthers 2-1 in Home Opener

Greencastle, Ind. - DePauw University men's soccer team opened its season with a 2-1 victory over the Greenville University Panthers.

From the very beginning of regulation, the Tigers and Panthers played physically in the chilly evening matchup. Trading fouls on both halves, DePauw managed to overpower Greenville's backline in the six-minute mark and draw a foul inside the penalty box.

Stepping up to take the penalty kick, senior midfielder Flynn Sheehan drilled the ball into the back of the net to give the Tigers a one-goal advantage early in the first half.

Throughout the rest of the half, DePauw worked to keep the ball on the Panthers' end, getting a total of eight looks on goal in comparison to Greenville's two.

At the start of the second half, the Tigers continued to find success in the Panthers' defensive end, notching one of two corners for the half in the 47th minute.

Despite Greenville's aggressive on-ball defense, DePauw continued to utilize their speed and footwork to move the ball across the pitch.

In the 65th-minute, the Tigers' found themselves back at the penalty kick line; this time, sophomore forward Sammy Gonzalez put the ball in the top left corner to give DePauw a 2-0 lead.

The Tigers' lead was eventually cut in half after a penalty goal by Luis Duran of the Panthers; however, DePauw staved off any other goals by moving the ball quickly and efficiently throughout the midfield.

The Tigers are back at Reavis Stadium on Sunday, March 7 at 2 pm EST to face Centre College.
