Tigers Lose 68-82 to Auggies in Daytona Beach Shootout

Daytona Beach, Fla.: The DePauw men's basketball team fell to Augsburg University 82-68 on day one of the Daytona Beach Shootout.

In the first half of play, the Tigers matched the Auggies' pace, keeping the first five minutes close between the two teams. Both teams took their time to heat up, but DePauw found its stride first, with a three-minute 10-2 run to go up 22-14 with 11 minutes left in the half. 

Unfortunately for the Tigers, Augsburg answered with its own 12 point run to take the lead. From that point on, the Auggies would maintain their lead throughout the game.

Down 45-36 at the half, Grant Gohmann battled in the paint to help cut DePauw's deficit by seven. That deficit would eventually grow to as much as 21 points with just under two minutes left in regulation after the Auggies shut down the Tigers' perimeter shooting and capitalized on fastbreak outlets off of the Tigers' four turnovers. 

Despite shooting just 40% from the field in the second half, the Tigers' did outscore the Auggies bench 17-8 and held Augsburg to 14 field goals in the second half.

Elijah Hales finished the evening with 18 points and 2-5 from behind the arc, with teammate Nolan Niego putting up 11 points and pulling in six rebounds. Augsburg's leading scorer was Joe Palmer with 29 points and eight rebounds, followed by Jack Sorenson with 14 points and two assists.

DePauw moves to 4 and 6 overall and faces Salisbury on Tuesday, December 21, at 6 pm EST.
