Tigers Can't Hold Lead in Bell Game; Opening Round of NCAA Championship is Next

Crawfordsville, Ind. - DePauw scored three first-quarter touchdowns, but host Wabash scored on six of its final eight possessions and claimed a 42-35 Monon Bell game win at Little Giant Stadium. The Tigers dropped to 8-2 overall and finished with an 8-1 North Coast Athletic Conference record and the conference title. Wabash finished its season at 7-3 overall and 6-3 in the NCAC.

The Tigers will open NCAA Division III Championship play on Saturday, November 20, with a first-round game against an opponent and at a site to be announced on NCAA.com tomorrow at 5:30 p.m.

Wabash picked up a couple of first downs on its opening series, but a fumble on a lateral was recovered by the Tigers at the Wabash 41.

DePauw quarterback Chase Andries connected with Trey Shaw for six yards on the first-down play and then handed off to Gus Baumgartner four-straight times with the fourth carry going for 14 yards and a touchdown.

The Tigers' defense then forced a three-and-out and the offense took over on its own 36. Andries completed a 26-yard pass to Josh Major and then a 36-yarder to Gabe Quigley which set up Baumgartner's 4-yard touchdown run to make it 14-0 with 5:59 left in the opening quarter.

Faced with a third-and-10 on its next possession, Wabash turned the ball over as Dylan Hyatt recorded his sixth interception of the season when he picked off Liam Thompson's pass at the DePauw 48.

Seven plays later, Andries tossed a high pass into the end zone and Trey Shaw pulled it down and the Tigers extended their lead to 21-0 with 2:02 remaining in the opening stanza.

Wabash got on the board early in the second as Thompson scored on a 1-yard run to cap an 8-play drive.

DePauw was on the march again on its next possession as it drove to the Wabash 18, but Andries was intercepted by Kamron Ferguson at the Wabash 7.

The teams exchanged punts before Wabash started on its own 44 with 3:42 left in the half. Heisman Skeens scored on a 1-yard run with 44 seconds left to cut the DePauw lead to 21-14.

The Tigers drove to the Wabash 34 and Andries' pass to Trey Shaw was picked off by Ferguson in the end zone on the final play of the half.

DePauw regained the momentum on the first drive of the second half as they used 11 plays to cover 72 yards with Baumgartner scoring his third touchdown of the game, a 1-yard run, to make it 28-14 with 8:52 left in the third.

Wabash came right back with a 9-play, 75-yard series capped by Thompson's 20-yard pass to Skeens with 4:58 remaining in the third. The Little Giants forced DePauw into a three-and-out and their offense took over on their own 49. Thompson connected with Derek Allen for a 31-yard gain on the first play and a roughing the passer penalty on the play moved the ball to the DePauw 20. Three plays later, Thompson completed a 10-yard scoring pass to Jackson Clayborne to even the score at 28-28 with 3:40 remaining in the third.

Early in the fourth the Tigers were forced to punt from their own 7 which gave the Little Giants the ball at the DePauw 47. Donovan Snyder carried four straight times with the final going for 37 yards and the go-ahead touchdown with 12:19 left.

Another DePauw punt pushed Wabash back on its own 13, but the Little Giants were able to take over eight minutes off the clock with a 14-play drive that culminated in Thompson's 1-yard pass to Clayborne with 2:21 remaining.

DePauw struck back with an 8-play, 75-yard drive as Andries connected with Josh Major for a 3-yard score. Wabash recovered Jack Drake's onside kickoff and the Little Giants ran out the clock.

DePauw outgained Wabash, 416-395, including 320-163 through the air. 

Baumgartner rushed for 80 yards on 19 carries and three touchdowns. Andries completed 26 of 40 passes for 320 yards. Shaw and Major each caught seven passes for 92 and 84 yards, respectively.

Snyder rushed for 137 yards on 29 carries, while Thompson completed 14 of 24 for 163 yards and three touchdowns. Allen, Cooper Sullivan and Clayborne each had four catches.

Daniel Rafeedie led DePauw with 13 tackles and Luke Marsh added 12. Josh Myers paced Wabash with 12 tackles and Jose Franco had 11. 

 

NOTES

  • Wabash moved its lead in the series to 63-55-9 and in the Monon Bell games to 44-39-6
  • The 82 combined points in the game were topped only by the 82 scored in the 1893 game which DePauw won, 48-34
  • Each of the last five games in the rivalry have been decided by seven or fewer points which is the longest such streak since the five straight from 1972 through 1976
  • Dylan Hyatt moved his season interception total to six and his career mark to 10 of which three came in Little Giant Stadium
  • Gus Baumgartner's three rushing touchdowns matched the previous DePauw Monon Bell game high set by Matt Hunt in 2016 in records that date back to 1952
  • Chase Andries moved into third place in DePauw history with 6,038 career total offense yards and fourth with 5,427 passing yards, 47 Passing TDs, 
  • DePauw's 21 first-quarter points were the most by the Tigers against Wabash in the opening quarter of any of the 127 games in the rivalry
