Eagles Soar past Tigers in 3-2 Overtime Win

Box Score

Sept. 7, 2019 (Fredericksburg, Va.)- The DePauw University field hockey team finished its weekend in Virginia with a 3-2 overtime loss to the University of Mary Washington Eagles.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Tigers got a step on the Eagles, pushing the ball quickly up the field. Cathy Zesiger dribbled past the defensive line into the striking-circle and put DePauw ahead by one with her second goal of the season.

DePauw's lead lasted for the majority of the second quarter until the Eagles tied up the game after rebounding a save.

Mary Washington and DePauw remained tied at one through the beginning of the fourth quarter. At the 45 minute mark, the Eagles struck first taking a late 2-1 lead.

Just two minutes later, however, the Tigers tie the game once again. Scoring off a penalty corner taken by Kate Milner, which was fielded by Kelsey Doerr who then passed it to an awaiting Alexa Steil to score.

With time running out, neither team was able to pull ahead and play led to multiple card violations and ultimately overtime.

In overtime the Eagles attacked quickly, getting deep into the DePauw striking-circle and scored the game-winning goal off a rebound once again.

The Tigers start conference play at Allegheny on Saturday, Sept. 14. Game time is set for 11 a.m.

I chose DePauw because I did not want my sports career to end in high school. DePauw allows me to participate in field hockey while also having the opportunity to be involved in other campus activities outside of athletics.
