Tigers Advance in NCAA Winner's Bracket

Greencastle, Ind. - Alyssa Nowak drove in three of DePauw's four runs and Riley Magoon pitched five innings of scoreless relief as the Tigers topped Saint Vincent in the opening day of the Greencastle Regional of the NCAA Division III Championship. DePauw moved to 32-12, while the Bearcats dropped to 29-15. The Tigers face Trine tomorrow in a winner's bracket game at 10 a.m. after the Thunder rallied for two in the seventh in a 4-3 win over Maryville (Tenn.). Saint Vincent and Maryville will battle in the following game. Complete information is available through the regional site.

The Bearcats loaded the bases in the first as the game's first three hitters reached base with two singles sandwiching a walk. However, the Tigers got out of it with a pop to short followed by both a liner and pop up to second. 

Saint Vincent took the lead in the third as Kelsey Tobin led off with a double before Lauren Miller walked. Riley Assalone reached on a DePauw fielding error and Tobin scored after a throwing error on the play.

DePauw countered in the fourth as Becca St. Germain singled with one out and pinch-hitter Sarah Beischer advanced to second on Grace Smith's single. Each moved up with stolen bases before Nowak delivered a two-run single to center.

The Tigers added two more in the sixth when Sidney Holler reached on an error and pinch-runner Paige Price moved to second on Beischer's single. Smith advanced each with a sacrifice bunt before Jordyn Fera's bunt single in front of the plate brought home Price. Nowak followed with a single the brought home Beischer.

Saint Vincent loaded the bases in the seventh, but the Tigers got out of it with a fly out to right to end the game.

Smith and Nowak each had two of DePauw's seven hits, while Johnna Karas and Tobin each had two of the Bearcats' five hits.

Magoon improved to 8-0 after allowing just two hits in five innings with seven strikeouts. Celia Knappenberger dropped to 16-8.
