Tigers Drop Doubleheader to #12 Linfield

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

McMinnville, Ore. - DePauw took a 9-7 lead into the bottom of the seventh of game one of its doubleheader at 12th-ranked Linfield, but the host Wildcats scored three for a 10-9 win and swept the doubleheader with a 13-4 win in the nightcap. DePauw dropped to 8-6, while Linfield improved to 18-4-1.

DePauw got out to a quick 4-0 lead as Jade Mejia Wick drove in a pair in the first with a triple before Becca St. Germain blasted a solo homer and Kaylyn Linder later stole home.

The Wildcats responded with a five-run bottom of the second. Darian Stedman put Linfield on the board with a solo homer before Paige Smotherman hammered a two-run shot. A passed ball allowed Alana Nuttman to score and tie the contest at 4-4 before Kelsey Wilkinson delivered an RBI single. Smotherman made it 6-4 with a solo homer in the third.

DePauw regained the lead with a three-run fourth. Grace Smith scored when Kate Geary reached on an error. Alyssa Nowak drove in Linder with a sacrifice fly to even the score at 6-6. Abey Bass' squeeze bunt plated Geary before St. Germain doubled home Sarah Beischer to push the Tigers' lead to 8-6.

Smotherman's third homer of the contest came in the sixth and trimmed the DePauw lead to 8-7, but the Tigers countered in the seventh as Ali Dierks scored when Mac Jones reached on a fielder's choice.

In the bottom of the seventh, Katie Phillips singled before Makenna Clizer and Stedman walked to load the bases. Chelsea Horita then delivered a bases-clearing double to end the game.

St. Germain, Smith and Linder each had two of DePauw's 10 hits. Phillips and Stedman each had three of the Wildcats' nine hits.

Cami Henry dropped to 4-3 with the loss in relief, while Shelby Saylor improved to 9-3 with the complete game victory.

In the second game, Linfield struck first as Clizer singled home Wilkinson in the first before Horita hit a solo homer in the second and Cameron Apling scored when Phillips reached on an error.

Bass hit a double in the third that plated Katerina Kilgore and Nowak to cut the Linfield lead to 3-2, but Horita's two-run single in the bottom of the inning pushed the Wildcats' lead to 5-2.

The Tigers closed to within one in the fourth on RBI singles by Smith and Caleigh Cramer.

Stedman's run-scoring double in the fourth and Smotherman's two-run homer in the inning made it 8-4. The Wildcats ended the game due to the run rule with a five-run fifth capped by Stedman's two-run homer.

Mejia Wick led DePauw with two of its eight hits, while Clizer and Stedman each had three of Linfield's 15 hits. Horita and Apling followed with two hits each.

Henry dropped to 4-4, while Tanna Benson improved to 9-1.

The Tigers wrap up their Northwest trip on Thursday with a Noon PDT doubleheader at George Fox.

I chose DePauw because I wanted a school that would fit me well both academically and athletically. DePauw gives me the competive atmosphere and challending academics, while allowing me to continue to play softball at the next level. With DePauw being a smaller school with a great reputation for their academics, I knew it was the place for me.
