Team Effort Helps Tigers Defeat Vikings 10-1

Box Score

Oct. 8, 2019- The DePauw University women's soccer team dominated the pitch in its first match against North Park University in program history, beating the Vikings 10-1.

The Tigers scored the most goals in a game since DePauw beat Millsaps 13-0 back in 2000, and secured the ball for over 60 percent of the match.

From kickoff, the game was physical; however, the Tigers speed became a clear advantage on both ends of the pitch.

North Park hit a nerve in the fifth minute of the match when its junior midfielder snuck the ball just over Reanna Stiehler's glove off a penalty kick.

The Vikings lead only lasted a total of fourteen seconds, for junior forward Alex Wendt took the ball up the middle following the initial kickoff and beat the last defender to tie the game.

That was the last time North Park led or tied the game; from then on, a total of eight different players scored the Tigers ten goals.

In the 16th minute, Shaili Kumar controlled a beautifully placed cross from Wendt to put the Tigers up 2-1. Just five minutes later, Allison Harvey found the back of the net after collecting a ball from Alex Berkley, beating her defender in a foot race and extending the lead 3-1.

About seven minutes after Harvey scored Abbie Morris settled a cross and dumped a pass to Mary Goodale for goal number four.

Freshman midfielder, Anissa Nourse, controlled a pass in midfield and managed to finesse her way into the middle of the goalie box to record the Tigers' fifth goal.

For some time, North Park picked up its physicality, forcing DePauw to fight a bit more for loose balls.

In the 51st-minute senior midfielder, Berkley took a line drive shot about 25 yards out and scored her second goal of the season.

Up 6-1 at the 55th-minute Wendt put in another goal off a controlled cross and slipping between two defenders to extend the lead to six goals (7-1).

Sophia Silcox earned two assists in a matter of just 10 minutes; her first assist was to Morris, who scored right in the center of the goalie box. Silcox's second assist found Kumar on the right side of the Vikings net, putting the Tigers up 9-1 with 20 minutes left in the game.

DePauw's final goal came in the 80th minute thanks to a fantastic ball by Kate Cowger off a corner kick. The ball soared over the Vikings backline to find Zoie Obst in the air. Obst connected with the ball and sent a rocket of a header into the net, finishing the game with an exclamation point.

The Tigers invite its fans to come out on Saturday, Oct. 12, at 5 p.m. to celebrate Senior Night and watch DePauw take on Hiram College its third NCAC opponent of the season.
