Tigers Top Battling Bishops to Draw Even in Conference Play

Greencastle, Ind. - An 11-0 run to start the second half and a later 8-0 stretch were keys to DePauw's 75-70 North Coast Athletic Conference win over Ohio Wesleyan. The Tigers improved to 10-5 overall and 4-4 in the NCAC, while the Battling Bishops dropped to 8-6 overall and 3-4 in the conference.

Ohio Wesleyan gained an early 9-2 lead on a pair of 3-pointers from Ethan Stanislawski and another from Jaret Gerber. The Tigers responded with a 9-0 run capped by Matthew Godfrey's 3-pointer with 14:08 left in the half which gave the hosts their first lead of the contest at 11-9. The rest of the half was back-and-forth with 11 lead changes and the Battling Bishops took a 36-30 advantage into the intermission.

Nick Felke nailed a 3-pointer on DePauw's first possession of the second half and added a layup with 16:33 remaining to trim the Ohio Wesleyan lead to 36-35. Luke Steinhart's bucket gave the Tigers the lead for good at the 15:29 mark before Nolan Ginther nailed a pair of free throws and Aaron Shank hit a jumper to make it 41-36 with 14:34 left.

Ohio Wesleyan was back within one at 52-51 after Stanislawski hit a three with 9:43 remaining. Cole Jenkins countered with a trey before Matt Mahlke knocked in a shot from beyond the arc and Jenkins added a basket to finish an 8-0 run and make it 60-51 at the 8:10 mark.

The Bishops got as close as three later in the half before the Tigers pushed the margin back to nine at 70-61. Ohio Wesleyan closed to five with 48 seconds remaining before the Tigers hit five free throws down the stretch.

Ginther led DePauw with a career-high 19 points, while Felke added 16 and Jenkins matched a career best with 14. Stanislawski paced Ohio Wesleyan with 25 points, while Grant Gossard added 13 and Gerber had 11.

The Battling Bishops held a 30-26 edge on the boards as Gabe Johnson had nine. Caymn Lutz snagged five for the Tigers.

DePauw shot 49.1 percent for the game including 53.8 percent in the second half, while Ohio Wesleyan connected on 51.0 percent from the field. The Tigers committed just nine turnovers to the Bishops' 15 for a 17-7 advantage in points off turnovers.

The Tigers return to action on Wednesday, January 16, with a 7 p.m. game at league-leading Wabash.
