Tigers Earn Split in Final Two Games at NFCA Leadoff Classic

Tucson, Ariz. - DePauw wrapped up its play at the National Fastpitch Coaches Association's Division III Leadoff Classic with a split of its two contests. The Tigers held on for a 14-13 win over MIT before dropping a 3-2 game to Birmingham-Southern.

Against MIT, the Tigers grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first before adding two more in the second and six in the fourth for a 10-1 lead. The Engineers cut into the lead with one in the fourth and three in the fifth before DePauw pushed the lead to 13-5 with three in the sixth. The Tigers took a 14-8 lead into the bottom of the seventh and MIT scored five with the final out coming at the plate with what would have been the tying run.

Megan Montgomery had three of DePauw's 13 hits, while Taytum Schaney, Abey Bass and Becca St. Germain each had two. Jasmin Joseph and Katherine Shade each had four of the Engineers' 17 hits with Devon Goetz, Amanda Lee and Sarah Von Ahn collecting two hits apiece.

Julia Bork improved to 2-0, while Amber VanHemel dropped to 1-1.

In the final game, DePauw scored one in the bottom of the first against Birmingham-Southern on Liz Getz's double. The Panthers evened the score in the third and grabbed a 3-1 lead with two in the seventh. 

St. Germain led off the DePauw seventh with a single and moved to second on Kaylyn Linder's sacrifice bunt. Montgomery followed with a single that scored St. Germain, but Montgomery was out at second on the play to end the game.

Five different Tigers had one hit each, while Abby Spencer and Krystyn Fisher each had two of Birmingham-Southern's nine hits.

Emma Baldwin dropped to 2-2 with the loss in relief, while Haley Crumpton picked up the win.

DePauw returns to action on Friday, March 16 with games against Illinois College (5 p.m.) and Illinois Wesleyan (7:30 p.m.) as part of the DePauw Invitational at Grand Park in Westfield.
