Top-Ranked Marlins Sweep Tigers

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Virginia Beach, Va. - The Tigers went toe-to-toe with top-ranked, undefeated and defending national champion Virginia Wesleyan in game one and tallied more runs in game two than any of the Marlins' opponents this year, but DePauw suffered a doubleheader sweep by scores of 2-1 and 12-9. The Tigers are now 4-12, while the Marlins moved to 22-0.

In the opener, DePauw took a 1-0 lead in the fourth against sophomore pitcher Hanna Hull, the 2017 Division III Player of the Year. Lauren Godden started the inning by reaching on an error and pinch-runner Sarah Beischer moved to second on Liz Getz's sacrifice bunt. After Becca St. Germain was hit by a pitch, Abey Bass doubled down the right field line, scoring Beischer. Sidney Holler singled to load the bases, but the threat ended with a pop out and a strikeout.

The Marlins came right back in the bottom of the fourth as Madison Glaubke led off with a triple before Amy Large drew a one-out walk. Kerrigan Simpson reached on a fielder's choice that allowed Glaubke to score. Maria Weddle later singled home Katelyn Biando.

DePauw left four runners stranded over the final three innings and 10 for the game in suffering the loss.

Kaylyn Linder had three of DePauw's seven hits, while Jessica Lindsay and Weddle each had two of the Marlins' seven hits.

Julia Bork dropped to 2-5 with the loss, while Hull improved to 13-0.

In the nightcap, DePauw took a 2-0 lead in the first on Megan Montgomery's RBI bunt single that scored Sarah Beischer before Linder scored on a wild pitch.

The Marlins evened the score in the bottom of the first as Kiersten Richardson scored when Biando reached on an error.

The Tigers regained the lead in the second when Beischer's bunt single plated Bass. Virginia Wesleyan sent 12 batters to the plate in the bottom of the second and scored seven times to take an 8-3 lead. The Marlins expanded the lead to 11-3 with three more in the bottom of the third.

Bekka Roberts' two-run double in the fourth trimmed the lead to 11-5, but the Marlins countered in the bottom of the frame on Glaubke's RBI double.

DePauw scored two in the fifth on Bass' RBI ground out and a run-scoring single from Holler. Lauren Godden's two-run homer in the sixth wrapped up the scoring.

Godden, Getz, Bass and Holler each had two of the Tigers' 12 hits. The nine runs were the most this season by a Virginia Wesleyan opponent with the previous high being six. Glaubke, Biando, Weddle and Julia Sinnett each had two of the Marlins' 10 hits.

Emma Baldwin dropped to 2-5 for the Tigers, while Alana Peters improved to 4-0 with Hanna Hull collecting her first save.

DePauw returns to action tomorrow with a 3 p.m. doubleheader at eighth-ranked Christopher Newport.
