DePauw Splits First Two at Leadoff Classic

Tucson, Ariz. - DePauw opened play at the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division III Leadoff Classic with a split as the Tigers topped #18 Messiah by an 11-4 score before losing to #22 George Fox, 9-5. The Tigers are now 3-1 on the season.

In the Messiah contest, the Tigers scored two each in the first and second innings before Messiah evened the score with a four-run third. 

DePauw broke open the contest in the top of the seventh as Alyssa Nowak led off with a single and scored on Taytum Schaney's triple. Kat Panos then singled home Schaney with a bunt before Sidney Holler walked and Megan Montgomery singled to load the bases. Bekka Roberts drew a walk and plated Sarah Beischer who entered for Panos. Becca St. Germain then delivered a two-out grand slam.

St. Germain had three of DePauw's 10 hits, while Schaney and Kathleen Byers added two apiece. Carrie Fix had four of the Falcon's eight hits. 

Emma Baldwin picked up the win in the circle for the Tigers, while Joy Kolakowski suffered the loss.

The Tigers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first against George Fox on St. Germain's two-run double. The Bruins tied the game with two in the third and then added one in the fourth and two in the fifth for a 5-2 lead.

DePauw tied the game in the fifth with the last two runs coming on Nowak's two-run single.

George Fox regained the lead with a solo run in the sixth before adding three in the seventh.

St. Germain and Abey Bass each had two of DePauw's eight hits, while Rebecca Pridmore, Annie Veatch and Kimi Ito each had three of the Bruins; 14 hits.

Devin Pieper suffered the loss and dropped to 0-1, while Madison Sorensen improved to 6-0.

The Tigers face Central and Wisconsin-Oshkosh tomorrow.
