Tigers Drop Second Extra-Inning Game of Day

Box Score

Westfield, Ind. - DePauw overcame a 4-1 first-inning deficit and led in both the seventh and eighth innings, but fifth-ranked Trine rallied for an 8-7 win in eight innings in the final game of the DePauw Invitational. DePauw dropped to 4-8, while Trine improved to 13-3.

DePauw's Kaylynn Linder reached on an error in the first and later scored on a wild pitch to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead. The Thunder countered with four in the bottom half of the opening frame. Mercede Daugherty singled home Erica Robles before Kaylee Fox delivered a sacrifice fly that plated Makenna Hartiline. Nicole Ferraro's double scored Lainey McCue and Ferrarro scored when Michaela Hartline reached on an error.

The Tigers wasted little time in tying the score with three in the second. Sidney Holler led off with a walk and moved to second on Liz Getz's bunt. Mina Shaw then entered as a pinch-runner for Holler and both Getz and Shaw advanced on stolen bases. Kat Panos then grounded out, scoring Shaw. Megan Montgomery doubled home Getz and later scored when Sarah Beischer reached on an error.

Trine regained the lead in the fourth on Kennedy Baugh's solo homer to left, but the Tigers again evened the score when Kathleen Byers drew a walk and pinch-runner Abey Bass scored on Lauren Godden's double to left.

The Thunder threatened in the bottom of the fifth by loading the bases with one out but DePauw pitcher Emma Baldwin recorded the final two outs with strikeouts.

Bass led off the DePauw seventh with a walk and moved to second on Godden's single. Holler's sacrifice bunt advanced the runners before Panos singled home Bass.

Trine forced extra innings in the seventh as Fox led off with a double and pinch-runner Tori Klingsmith entered as a pinch-runner. McCue singled before a wild pitch advanced the runners. Ferraro followed with a sacrifice fly that evened the score at 6-6.

With the tiebreaker rule in place for the eighth, Megan Montgomery was placed on second and moved to third on Jordyn Fera's sacrifice bunt. Breanna DeYoung reached on a fielder's choice sacrifice bunt that plated Montgomery.

Morgan Poeppel was placed on second to start the Trine eighth and moved to third when Robles reached on a fielder's choice sacrifice bunt. With one out, Daugherty singled to left scoring both Robles and Poeppel and ending the game.

Godden had two of DePauw's six hits, while Robles, Daugherty, Fox and McCue each had two of Trine's 10 hits.

Baldwin suffered the loss in the circle for the Tigers and dropped to 2-3, while Hannah Kampmann went the distance for Trine to improve to 5-2.

DePauw returns to action on Sunday, March 25, when it travels to Salisbury for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
