Tigers Open Season with Pair of Wins

Maryville, Tenn. - DePauw opened the 2018 season with a pair of wins as the Tigers topped John Carroll, 6-1, and defeated Maryville, 13-4.

Against John Carroll, the Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the first as Lauren Godden singled home Jordyn Fera. The Blue Streaks evened the score in the second, but the Tigers broke through for three in the third on Godden's two-run single before Sidney Holler scored on an error after Julia Bork's outfield single.

Fera drove in Megan Montgomery in the fourth with a sacrifice bunt and Sarah Beischer plated Taytum Schaney in the same inning with a single.

Beischer and Godden each had two of DePauw's eight hits, while five different John Carroll players collected one each.

Bork picked up the win in the circle after allowing one run in five innings. Devin Pieper pitched two innings of scoreless relief and struck out four. Jennifer Patterson suffered the loss for John Carroll.

In the win over Maryville, the host Scots scored three in the first and one in the second and appeared in control as the Tigers collected just one hit over the first four innings. In the fifth, Bekka Roberts plated Mina Shaw from third with a ground out. 

DePauw scored eight in the sixth inning with all of the runs scoring with two outs. Godden delivered an RBI double before Becca St. Germain singled home pinch-runner Beischer. Alyssa Nowak's two-run single gave the Tigers the lead and Abey Bass' followed with a run-scoring single. DePauw added three unearned runs to make it 9-4.

Roberts and Bass each brought home one with singles in the seventh and Schaney scored a pair with a double.

Liz Getz, St. Germain and Kaylyn Linder each had three of DePauw's 16 hits, while Bass added two. Ashton Hayden, Taylor Campbell and Essence Strambler each had two of the Scots' eight hits.

Emma Baldwin took the win in the circle for DePauw as she struck out six in four innings in relief of Brook Bandy. Katlyn Smith suffered the loss. 

DePauw returns to action March 2-4 when it competes in the NFCA Division III Leadoff Classic in Tucson, Ariz.
