Wittenberg Remains Undefeated with 76-64 Win Over DePauw

Springfield, Ohio -- DePauw lost to the undefeated and third-ranked Wittenberg Tigers 76-64 on Wednesday as they drop their third straight and fall to 7-11 overall and 3-8 in NCAC play.

Wittenberg had four in double figures and a game-high 23 points from Mitchell Balser. Jack VandeMerkt led DePauw with 14 points and eight rebounds. David Vogel scored nine, Nolan Ginther scored eight, and Nick Felke, Josh Hall and Ken Decker each recorded seven.

Wittenberg (18-0, 11-0) started the game on a 9-2 run as DePauw shot 1-of-6 from the field in the opening five minutes. However, DePauw made their next three shots and two free throws from  VandeMerkt made it 11-10 with 11 minutes left in the first half.

DePauw only scored six more points in the half and trailed 37-16 at intermission. However, they battled back to within four in the second half to trail 46-42 with 11:53 to go – a 26-9 run.

A Chad Roy and-one opportunity on the other end was a punch in the gut and started a 10-2 run for Wittenberg. The closest DePauw got again was at 2:31, trailing 67-60.

Both teams shot near 40 percent from the floor, but DePauw was considerably better from long range (47 percent to 24 percent). Both teams also shot above 80 percent from the charity stripe.

Wittenberg outrebounded DePauw 44-27 and outscored DePauw in the paint 36-26 and in second chance points 15-2. DePauw's bench held a 25-7 scoring advantage.

DePauw stays on the road for their next matchup as they head to Wooster on Saturday for a 2 p.m. game.
