DePauw Splits Season-Opening Games

Lexington, Ky. - DePauw opened the season with a pair of games at the Transy Tournament hosted by Transylvania and came away with a 7-6 win over Wartburg after a 9-3 loss to 18th-ranked Trine.

In the late game against Wartburg, DePauw took a 1-0 lead in the first as Megan Montgomery tripled and scored on Alyssa Nowak's sacrifice fly.

Wartburg grabbed a 4-1 lead in the third when Liz Roby-Miklus singled, stole second, moved to third on Erica Countryman's single and scored by stealing home. Kailee O'Brien followed with an RBI double before Kimberly Wedeking hit a two-run homer to center.

DePauw cut the lead to 4-3 in the fourth with two unearned runs, but the Knights came right back in the bottom of the fourth as Roby-Miklus walked and later scored on O'Brien's double.

The Tigers regained the lead in the top of the fifth as Lauren Godden singled home Montgomery before Kathleen Byers plated Nowak with a bases loaded walk and Julia Bork drove in Godden and Sidney Holler with a double to center.

Wartburg trimmed the lead to 7-6 with an unearned run in the sixth, but DePauw held on for the win. 

Montgomery had three of DePauw's 10 hits, while Byers had a pair. O'Brien had three of Wartburg's six hits.

Devin Pieper picked up the relief win for DePauw, while Wedeking suffered the loss.

In the Trine game, DePauw pitchers walked 12 Thunder batters and fell behind 8-1 after two innings. 

The Tigers totaled five hits with Nowak leading the way with two in her first collegiate game. Erica Robles and Carly Bachna each had two of Trine's six hits.

Hannah Kampmann picked up the win in relief of Kate Saupe. Kampmann allowed just one hit in 4 2/3 innings. Brooke Bandy suffered the loss after giving up seven runs and six walks in two innings. 

The Tigers face Transylvania in Sunday's 10 a.m. game and then will play at 2 or 4 p.m. in either the third-place or championship game.
