Wittenberg Heats Up Late to Capture Win Over DePauw

Greencastle, Ind. -- DePauw and Wittenberg were tied heading into the final 13:21 of Wednesday's North Coast Athletic Conference game, but Wittenberg sparked a run and never looked back as they took a 77-64 win at Neal Fieldhouse.

Wittenberg remains undefeated in the young season at 7-0 overall and 3-0 in the NCAC, while DePauw drops to 2-4 overall and 0-2 in conference play.

DePauw held their largest lead at 44-40 with 15:33 remaining in the second half but went scoreless for the next four minutes as Wittenberg went on a 7-0 run. Nick Felke hit a layup at 11:36 to bring DePauw within one at 47-46, but Wittenberg again scored the next seven points and held a 54-46 lead with 9:33 left.

Three minutes later Wittenberg's lead jumped to 10 and got to as high as 16 in the final minutes of the game. A pair of 3-pointers from Cris Burrough attempted to turn the tide, but it became too little too late.

Wittenberg's Mitchell Balser led all scorers with 17 points. Chad Roy scored 12 points, and Landon Martin scored 10. Jordan Pumroy scored nine points and a game-high 12 rebounds.

Jack VandeMerkt led DePauw with 13 points and five rebounds. David Vogel scored 11, and freshman Nick Felke scored a career-high 10 in first start. Riley Doody added career-highs with nine points and six assists.

DePauw shot 41 percent (25-of-61) compared to Wittenberg's 52 percent (28-of-54). Both teams hit seven 3-pointers, but Wittenberg shot at 44 percent to DePauw's 30 percent. Finally, DePauw went 7-of-13 (54 percent) from the charity stripe as Wittenberg went 14-of-17 (82 percent).

DePauw was out-rebounded 41-25 but outscored Wittenberg in the paint 34-30. Wittenberg won the fast break advantage 8-2 and outscored DePauw's bench 31-16.

DePauw will remain at home this week with another contest Saturday against Wooster. Game time is at 2 p.m.
