DePauw Splits Two at Illinois Wesleyan Tournament

Bloomington, Ill. - The Tigers moved to 11-12 on the season after splitting their two Saturday games at the Illinois Wesleyan Tournament. In the opening game, DePauw topped UW-Eau Claire, 5-3, before dropping a 6-4, nine-inning contest to 13th-ranked Washington University.

In the day's first game, DePauw jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second on Liz Getz's solo homer to right center. Lauren Godden singled with two outs in the third and pinch-runner Sarah Beischer stole second. After Haleigh Chasteen walked, Sidney Holler doubled home Beischer.

The Blugolds evened the score in the fourth as Evie Schaller singled and pinch-runner Gracia Larson stole second. Brooke Varian delivered a two-run homer to left center. 

Linsey Button's solo blast in the fifth put DePauw ahead, 3-2, but UW-Eau Claire tied the score in the sixth as Sam Noetzelman reached on an error that allowed pinch-runner Kiley Rondeau to score.

Sammi Bell singled with one out in the top of the seventh. Button's sacrifice bunt moved her to second and Godden followed with a two-run homer to right center.

DePauw totaled 11 hits as Bell, Godden and Getz each totaled two. Schaller had two of the Blugolds' four hits.

Brooke Bandy improved to 4-4 in the circle for the Tigers after allowed just one earned run and three hits in 6 1/3 innings while striking out eight. Zana Lorbetske dropped to 4-4 with the loss.

In the evening game, DePauw took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second as Getz singled with one out and stole second. Bekka Roberts reached on a fielder's choice as Getz moved to third on a throwing error. Julia Waggoner scored Getz on a ground out.

The Tigers added single runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Holler led off the fourth with a single and pinch-runner Autumn Ratliff scored when Getz doubled. Gabby Smart and Bell singled to lead off the DePauw fifth and Button advanced each with a sacrifice bunt. Godden's grounder scored Smart and gave the Tigers a 3-0 lead.

Washington knotted the score in the sixth as Janet Taylor singled with one out and moved to second on an error. Brooke Hofer singled home Taylor with two outs before Halle Steinberg walked and Maggie Clapp reached on an error that allowed Hofer to score. After Melinique Walls walked to load the bases. Ashley Madsen drove in Steinberg with an infield single.

The teams moved to the eighth where the tiebreaker rule was invoked. Hofer was placed on second and moved to third on a passed ball before Steinberg doubled her home. The Tigers retired the next three batters to end the inning.

DePauw evened the score in the bottom of the eighth as Button was placed on second and moved to third on Godden's single. Holler's single to left scored Button and evened the score.

In the Bears' top of the ninth, Madsen was placed on second and moved to third on Hannah Mehrle's sacrifice bunt. After Traylor was hit by a pitch with two outs, Taylor Arends followed with a double to left that scored both runners. 

DePauw totaled 11 hits as Smart, Bell, Godden, Holler and Getz each had two. Five different Bears had one hit apiece.

Emma Baldwin dropped to 4-7, while Annie Pitkin improved to 16-4.

DePauw faces UW-La Crosse and Illinois Wesleyan on Sunday.
