Tigers Open NCAC Play with Sweep of Hiram

Greencastle, Ind. - On a day that featured winds gusting above 50 miles per hour, DePauw limited Hiram to just three hits on the way to a North Coast Athletic Conference sweep of the Terriers by scores of 9-1 and 5-0. The Tigers improved to 8-11 overall and 2-0 in the NCAC, while Hiram dropped to 5-17 overall and 0-2 in conference play.

In the opener, the Tigers grabbed a 3-0 lead in the first as Gabby Smart led off with a single, stole second and moved to third on Sammi Bell's sacrifice bunt. Linsey Button reached on a sacrifice bunt as Smart beat the throw to the plate. Lauren Godden followed with a single to right before Haleigh Chasteen loaded the bases with a bunt single.

Ashlee Gibson lifted a fly ball to center that was dropped for a sacrifice fly as Button scored on the play. Sidney Holler's single plated Jessica Szyska who pinch-ran for Chasteen.

Smart led off the second with a double and scored on Bell's triple down the right field line. Button's sacrifice bunt plated Bell and gave the Tigers a 5-0 lead.

DePauw added two more in the third as Gibson and Bekka Roberts each singled and advanced a base on Holler's sacrifice bunt. Megan Montgomery's single scored Gibson and pinch-runner Liz Getz crossed when Bell reached on an error.

Hiram's first hit came in the fourth as Jessica Wahl led off with a single before Dana Perrotta was hit by a pitch and Meghan Garland reached on an error. Wahl scored when Brittany Zajac also reached on an error.

The Tigers ended the game in the bottom of the fifth as Montgomery and Smart singled with two outs before Bell reached on an error to load the bases. Button also reached on an error that allowed Montgomery to score and Godden ended the game with a single up the middle that scored Smart.

DePauw totaled 14 hits as Smart led the way with three. Godden, Chasteen, Roberts and Montgomery each had two. Wahl and Kali Stover each had one for the Terriers.

Gibson improved to 3-1 with the win after allowed one unearned run with two strikeouts and no walks. Garland dropped to 2-9.

Brooke Bandy and Emma Baldwin combined for a one-hit shutout in the nightcap as DePauw scored two in the fourth and three in the sixth. 

Holler led off the fourth with a single and Montgomery, who entered as a pinch-runner, moved to second on Kat Panos' sacrifice bunt. Getz's singled home Montgomery and moved to second on an error on the play. Smart made it 2-0 with a double to left.

Panos singled to lead off the sixth and Getz walked. Julia Waggoner reached on an error on her sacrifice bunt. Kathleen Byers pinch hit for Smart and walked to score Panos. Bell then doubled down the left field line to make it 5-0.

Hiram's lone hit was an infield single with two outs in the fifth. 

DePauw totaled eight hits as Getz led with two. 

Bandy improved to 3-4 after allowing one hit and striking out six in five innings. Baldwin picked up her second save after retiring all six batters she faced and striking out four.

DePauw hosts Ohio Wesleyan in an NCAC doubleheader on Wednesday, April 6, at 4 p.m.
