Box Score 2 Whittier, Calif. - DePauw extended its win streak to four with a 5-2 win at Whittier in the first game of a doubleheader, but dropped the second game, 9-3. The Tigers moved to 5-8, while the Poets are now 9-11.
In the opener, Whittier scored all of its runs in the first innings as Montana Potts reached on an error and Marialena Ahern followed with a homer to left.
The score remained 2-0 until the top of the fifth when Sammi Bell scored on a stolen base and Gabby Smart came home when Rebekkah Roberts reached on an error.
In the sixth, Rachael Honaker singled and Liz Getz walked. Katerina Panos ran for Honaker and stole third before scoring on an error on the play. Lauren Godden added an RBI double that scored Getz before Bell tripled home Godden.
Godden had three of DePauw's seven hits, while Kacey Whitney had two of Whittier's six.
Ashlee Gibson improved to 2-1 after pitching three scoreless innings of relief. Rachel Alhanati dropped to 1-6.
In the nightcap, DePauw scored a pair in the second as Bell and Gibson singled and Panos doubled them home.
A DePauw outfield error with the bases loaded in the bottom of the second allowed Whittier to cut the lead in half. The Poets took the lead in the third as Kaitlin Garza singled and scored on an outfield error on Ahern's double down the left field line. Mega Heal's sacrifice fly made it 3-2.
Bell led off the DePauw fourth with a walk and moved to second on Gibson's grounder before scoring on Panos' single.
The score remained 3-3 until the bottom of the sixth when the Poets struck for six unearned runs capped by Sarah Crawford's grand slam.
Panos had three of DePauw's six hits, while Garza, Crawford and Natalia Sanchez each collected two for Whittier.
Emma Baldwin dropped to 2-4, while Crawford improved to 2-1.
The Tigers return to action on Tuesday, March 22, with a 5 p.m. PDT doubleheader at Redlands.
