Battling Bishops Find Range in Win over Tigers

Greencastle, Ind. – Ohio Wesleyan made just three additional field goals than DePauw on Saturday but connected on 17 3-pointers to take an 84-71 win in DePauw's North Coast Athletic Conference opener.

The Battling Bishops (3-3, 1-0 NCAC) entered shooting 29 percent from beyond the arc but shot 45 percent on Saturday and 47 percent from the field (29-of-62). DePauw (2-4, 0-1) entered at 42 percent from the arc but made just 21 percent (4-of-19) of their attempts and finished the game shooting 42 percent from the field (26-of-62).

Luke Lattner led the Tigers with 19 points and eight rebounds. Jack VandeMerkt was a rebound shy of the double-double at 18 points and nine rebounds.

Ohio Wesleyan's Ben Simpson led all scorers with 25 points. Will Orr and Seth Clark each added 17 points.

The Battling Bishops held a 43-29 lead at halftime and only expanded that to 20 in the opening minutes of the second half with back-to-back 3-pointers. They got their lead up to 24 at 54-30 with 17:29 left in the half.

When Ohio Wesleyan had their largest lead at 80-50 with 7:11 remaining, DePauw closed the game on a 21-4 run and won the second half 42-41. Freshman Ethan Jarrett ended the game with six points and three assists thanks to some efficient plays to close the game.

DePauw outrebounded Ohio Wesleyan 38-31 and outscored them in the paint 34-22 and off the bench 20-19. Ohio Wesleyan had eight fast break points to DePauw's two.

DePauw looks to get back in the win column Wednesday when they travel to Wittenberg.
