Box Score Greencastle, Ind. - Second-seeded DePauw fell behind 3-0 in the second inning to top-seeded Trine but the Tigers broke through with four runs in the third and claimed a 7-5 win to capture the Greencastle Regional of the NCAA Division III Softball Championship.
The Tigers moved to 33-13 and advanced to the Division III Super Regional where they'll face Moravian in a best-of-three series beginning on Friday at a site to be determined. Trine finished its season at 39-5.
DePauw got off to a rough start as Carly Searles led off with a double to left center and moved to third on Kaitlyn Clark's grounder. Kendra Marshall lifted a fly ball to left center that was dropped after a collision between the Tigers' left and center fielders.
Amy Newell led off the second with a single down the left field line and moved to second when the throw back to the infield was off the mark. Rachel Harris and Leah Hall followed with back-to-back doubles to make it 3-0 in favor of the Thunder.
Trine loaded the bases in the third with one out, but Tigers' starter Kahla Nolan worked out of the jam with a grounder and a strikeout.
Jennifer Ridge led off the DePauw third with an infield single and moved to second on Gabby Smart's grounder. Morgan McCord entered as a pinch-hitter and drew a walk before Elizabeth Getz singled down the right field line, scoring Ridge. After Getz stole second, Linsey Button followed with a two-run single to left and moved to second on the throw to the plate. Lauren Godden followed with a single to right center which plated Button and gave the hosts a 4-3 lead.
Taylor Golden led off the DePauw fourth with a walk and Bree Fuller came in to replace Justine Robles in the circle. Ridge singled Robles to second before McCord drew a walk to load the bases. Sammi Bell fouled out to right, but Golden scored with Ridge and McCord each moving up a base. Getz walked to load the bases again and Button followed with a single to left that scored Ridge. McCord was thrown out at the plate by the left fielder to end the inning with DePauw leading, 6-3.
Rebekkah Roberts replaced Nolan in the circle in the sixth to face Searles and the Trine leadoff hitter drew a walk. Nolan came back in the game and Clark ripped a double to left center that brought home Searles and made it 6-4. DePauw head coach Erica Hanrahan brought in Emma Baldwin and the freshman struck out the third, fourth and fifth hitters in the Thunder lineup to end the inning.
DePauw added one more in the sixth as Smart led off with a single and stole second. KJ Holden entered as a pinch-runner and moved to third on McCord's sacrifice bunt. Bell then fouled off eight straight pitches before delivering a run-scoring single up the middle.
Amy Newell led off the Thomas More seventh with a homer to left center and Erica Robles followed with a single, but Baldwin retired the final three hitters to preserve the win.
Button and Ridge each had two of DePauw's nine hits, while Newell had three of Trine's 11 hits. The Thunder left 11 runners stranded in the loss, while DePauw left just five.
Nolan improved to 18-8 with the win, while Baldwin collected her sixth save. Robles finished 18-4 on the season.
Button was named the most outstanding player of the regional after hitting .500, driving in eight runs and hitting a pair of homer. Bell, Nolan and Ridge joined her on the all-tournament team, while Fuller, Kaylee Fox and Searles earned spots as well. Also making the team were Thomas More's Sammy Sagers and Mamee Salzer in addition to Washington University's Paige Biles.
