Box Score 2 Newport News, Va. - After dropping the first game of a doubleheader at 22nd-ranked Christopher Newport and trailing 3-0 in the sixth inning of the nightcap, DePauw scored two runs in each of the last two innings including the final two with two outs to take a split of the twinbill.
DePauw dropped the opener, 12-4 in five innings, and won game two, 4-3. The Tigers are now 8-7 on the season and Christopher Newport is 11-6.
In the opener, the Captains scored one in the first when Scoop Simon's double plated Meagan Jones. They added five more in the second as Simon was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Tori Clarke drove in a pair with a single. Sabrina Hill's single scored Simon and Clarke came home after an error on the play.
DePauw reached the scoreboard in the fourth when Linsey Button led off with a double and later scored when Gabby Smart reached on an error.
Simon's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fourth brought home Jones and made it 7-1.
The Tigers' final runs came in the fifth when Button's three-run homer scored Rebekkah Roberts and Sammi Bell.
Christopher Newport scored five times in the fifth to end the game due to the eight-run rule.
Button had two of DePauw's four hits, while Jones had three of the Captains' 12 with Clarke and Alexis Pope added two each.
Kahla Nolan dropped to 3-5 on the season, while Hanah Marshall improved to 6-2.
In game two, the hosts again scored in the opening inning as Rachael Shiflett singled with one out and later scored on a wild pitch. Brittney Walters hit a two-run homer in the fourth to make it 3-0.
DePauw's comeback started in the sixth when Elizabeth Getz led off with a single and stole second. Button doubled to left center, scoring Getz. Button moved to third on Lauren Godden's grounder and scored when Alli Dennie singled up the middle.
In the seventh, Bell homered to left center with two outs before Getz and Button followed with singles. Godden then delivered a single down the right field line, allowing Getz to score.
The Captains put runners on second and third with one out, but Hannah Cook lined out to third baseman Taylor Golden and Golden doubled up Rahcael Payne at third.
Getz finished with three of DePauw's 10 hits, while Button and Godden each had two. The Captains finished with just three hits as three different players collected one apiece.
KJ Holden improved to 1-0 with two innings of scoreless relief, while Krista Lewis dropped to 5-4.
DePauw returns to action on Thursday with a doubleheader at Lynchburg.
