Tigers drop 3-2 contest to OWU

Box Score

Greencastle, Ind. – In a battle for sole possession of first place in the North Coast Athletic Conference, Ohio Wesleyan defeated DePauw 3-2 on Tuesday.

The win keeps the Battling Bishops undefeated in the NCAC at 5-0-1, while the Tigers lose their first NCAC contest and drop to 4-1-1.

In a tightly contested match, DePauw (9-2-3) struck first on a breakaway goal from Julian Gonzalez, his first of two on the night. DePauw looked to go up 2-0 when Alieu Musa stuck a well-crossed ball to Gonzalez, but his shot hit the right post.

The momentum swung quickly after as Ohio Wesleyan took the rebound down the field and was able to tie it at 1-1. Gunnar Bloecher placed himself near the right side of the goal and found Lonnie Barnes in front of the net.

The Battling Bishops took their first lead of the game at 49:39 in the second half with a goal from Phoenix Neitzelt. He scored from the middle of the box off a pass from Evan Lee.

Gonzalez connected on his second goal off a pass from Mitch Reavis as an equalizer at 64:44. But Ohio Wesleyan's Kyle Baum hit the game-winner almost 20 minutes later to give the Battling Bishops the win. Lee recorded his second assist on the score.

Shots were fairly even with Ohio Wesleyan taking 18 and DePauw taking 14. However, DePauw goalkeeper Chris Yount was busier in the net with seven saves, while OWU keeper Ben Farynowski made just one save. Yount (8-2-3) took the loss, and Farynowski (11-2-2) took the win.

The Tigers have an away contest at Denison on Saturday before returning back to Reavis Stadium for their home regular season finale against Wabash on Oct. 28.
