Box Score Greencastle, Ind.- Three first-half goals would prove to be enough for the Tigers who defeated the visiting Marian Knights 4-2, Thursday night at Reavis Stadium.
With the win, DePauw improved to 1-2 overall, while Marian dropped to 2-1-1. The win also marks the first victory for first-year Tiger head coach, Megan McCormick.
DePauw scored early and often in the first half, tallying three goals in the opening 26 minutes. Kelsey Cobbs delivered the opening goal in the 8th minute when she headed in a corner kick from Elizabeth Seewer. In the 14th minute it was Seewer who found the back of the net on an assist from Jennifer Dimos.
The Tigers would take advantage of an errant pass by the Marian goalie in the 26th minute to make the score 3-0. Stephanie Martin intercepted a pass deep in the Knight's defensive zone and found Seewer for her second goal of the contest.
In the second half, DePauw took advantage of another Marian miscue. Freshman Bridget Brendza controlled a loose ball inside of the Knight's defensive zone and delivered a powerful strike into the corner of the net to put the Tigers up 4-0.
Marian did not go down without a fight, cutting the DePauw lead in half late in the contest. Colleen Diemer connected on a beautiful set piece assisted by Tawni Trickey in the 74th minute for the Knight's first goal. Marian would score again just six minutes later when Marianne Sergi scored on an assist from Diemer.
The Tigers would successfully navigate the final 10 minutes and hold on to the lead for their first victory of the season. Emma Cooper grabbed eight saves in the win, while Madeline Weber and Morgan Jennings combined for four saves in the loss.
DePauw returns to action Saturday, September 6, when they host Centre for a 7:00 p.m. showdown.
