Gonzalez Good as Gold; Tigers Take Down Saints

Box Score

Greencastle, Ind.- After winning a rain-soaked contest against Hanover on Wednesday night, the DePauw men's soccer team decided to make Friday's contest against 23rd-ranked Thomas More a little less entertaining. The two teams needed over 100 minutes before Julian Gonzalez sent the Tigers home happy, defeating the Saints by a score of 2-1.

With the 2OT victory, DePauw improved to 4-2 on the year, while Thomas More dropped to 4-1.

The teams battled early on, but neither one was able to net a goal in the first half. It was Jonathan Wheeler who put the Tigers up 1-0 when he notched a goal in the 54th minute on an assist from Gonzalez.

Thomas More battled back over the next 20 minutes and were able to tally an equalizer when Jack Little beat DePauw goalkeeper Jake Pezzuto with just under 15 minutes left to play. Brian Runyon provided an assist on Little's goal.

The Saints fired the final shot of regulation with 30 seconds to play, but Pezzuto was able to corral it and send the contest to overtime. The first overtime session proved to be relatively uneventful other than a header thrown on goal by DePauw's Andy Morrison.

In the second overtime it was Morrison again applying early pressure as he fired a shot that deflected of the Saints' goalkeeper, Matt Kees. Following the deflection, Gonzalez found himself in the right place at the right time as he ripped a shot into the back of the net, sending the Tiger faithful into a frenzy.

The combination of Gonzalez and Morrison accounted for 10 of DePauw's 16 shots, including five shots on goal and the pairing tallied a combined for four total points.

DePauw set the tone physically, collecting 23 fouls and three yellow cards, while Thomas More had 13 fouls with two yellow cards. The Tigers held a 16-12 edge on shots, but the Saints totaled 10 corner kicks to DePauw's three.

Both goalkeepers played exceptionally in net as Pezzuto grabbed four saves in the win and Kees made six saves in defeat.

The Tigers are back in action Wednesday, September 17, when they travel to Rose-Hulmam for a 7:00 p.m. contest.
